Dealing with woodpeckers, (besides using a pellet gun).

This is damage from our local pecker-heads, in the area. The acorns are dropping, furiously, right now and the woodpeckers are super busy drilling holes into our garage and home. Amigo can NOT keep up watch! Too much going on! Any suggestions?

wow! i never thought woodpeckers did that much damage
we dont have woodpeckers, but to keep birds away from our verandah people suggested use owl statues and hang up eagle silhouettes.. not sure if they would work ?

Someone told me of netting that can be hung but such a show stopper, for sure! Better than losing your home, though.

OMG! I have a cute little woodpecker i see in my yard every so often and i LOVE him but i never thought of them as being that destructive! I would not find that very 'cute' either.

Wow! That's a lot of damage from woodpeckers! Could there be a reason for them to spend so much effort at this? Like termites? Carpenter ants? Carpenter bees? They generally peck into wood to get at insects beneath. I've even seen them pecking on metal pipes holding TV antennas (remember them?) on roofs, because they could hear bugs inside them. They don't peck holes just to peck holes. There must be a reason.

Has Amigo ever met a bird bigger then himself outdoors? I've been getting mental images of a big white cockatoo swooping in from outta nowhere at woodpeckers or a group of wild finches stealing his seed!

Bill, this is the back side of our garage. I don't think we have termites, (besides woodpeckers), our home and garage is all redwood. Our neighbors down the hill, blast these guys with guns! Maybe that's why we have so many around here, not sure. Yesterday, my husband and myself witnessed Amigo freaking out on these guys. They were swarming him, (flying), around the palm tree he was in, I've never seen this before, he was pretty upset about it. He never has liked woodpeckers, especially when they are in his tree!

Mudkips, like duh?! That's what Amigo does! He's scared to death of birds bigger than him, vultures are super scary for him even though they are not a threat, hawks around here are comparable in size but they can be threatening, he knows this to be true.

We have had a woodpecker from time to time. I read that one thing you can try is hanging suet feeders for them in a tree close to where they are causing the damage. The idea is that they will go for the "easy meal" over the one they have to work for. Haven't tried it yet myself.

I don't think they are drilling holes looking for food, they are drilling holes to store food in. These birds, all day long, right now, are shoving acorns into these holes!

I'm just wondering, if Amigo keeps them from drilling in the trees, they would normally use?
