dead babies, dead eggs, one bad fat bird

my boyfriends son was here for the first time in a year after a nasty custody battle, and he woke up around 7 am and opened the cages..
my 8 year old conure got into the nesting areas and all i found this morning were beaks, neck, wings, feet, and he pecked all of the eggs..
is this normal behavior?
they werent his babies btw..

I don't know for certain but I'd imaging that if there are babies and eggs and an older bird gets involved that the not much would be left over. I may have even have started out as playful.

This does kind of make me sick though!

i separated him and am now housing him in my bedroom away from everyone else.

How many babies did you lose? Were they conures?

I lost 6 babies and 12 eggs. they were turquoise x cinnamon, mitred, and normal green cheek x yellow sided..

I'm refunding 90% of everybodys purchases and will be providing the next batch for free.

I'm so sorry you had to have to see that. It sounds like a horror. I don't know anything more about breeding than I read on this site, but I'll never be able to wrap my brain around why the adults mutilate their own and others offspring. It seems like so much work and so much responsibility to breed and care for these babies. I'm so appreciative to breeders and feel bad that this is what you got back.

I like to think that there's always something to learn from any situatuion, so I'm sure that it will happen with this for you - so that might be the only good that comes from it.

So sorry for this horrible event, not everything goes smoothly especially in breeding. Tho I really like it how you tried to apologies to your customers by giving them free chicks. Wish all breeders were like you.

That is so sad. Would putting padlocks on all cages prevent this happening again? I padlock all my chinchilla cages since my son trapped one's paws in the door and left her hanging there

Do you normally remove the males before hatching begins ? Was the culprit a breeder also ? So sorry this happened to you. Did you use it as a chance to educate the child so it doesnt happen again ? You are too kind to give free chicks from the next batch, most breeders wouldnt do that.
