SoOOOoOoOoo... Flash freaked me out about 3 days after we'd brought her home. I was cleaning her cage out one afternoon.. she suddenly jumped into the front corner of her cage - closest to me - raised her rear end, dropped her neck, pulled her head back & started purring.. purring so loud it seemed like a growl to me. I backed up & watched her.. talking to her & studying the movements, etc. Paused because I figured I'd spooked her & that perhaps this was a warning shot fired in my direction! But, I was truly perplexed. She did not demonstrate any nervousness while doing this.. no anger.. no hissing, no open beak.. I was honestly afraid she was about to drop over from fresh air at that point. (An unfortunate joke we'd made since rescuing her from her previous arrangement) :52:
I walked away for a moment & came back when she was 'done'. Didn't see it again that entire day...
Over the next several days I noticed it more & more. However, only when *I* was near her! My husband (totally NOT a bird-person) said "oh, yeah - dad said she used to do that all the time. She thinks she's laying an egg."
I wish I could show you the face I made when he said that. Like, OK, no. :20:
So once her talons were trimmed up & I'd cleaned most of the tar off of her (she came from a nasty, very SMOKEY home), I pulled her out one night to see how she'd react to my cuddle-advances.
No sooner did I get her on my lap after I sat down, I noticed her acting anxious. I slowed down a bit & observed... she then took the purr stance again & leaned into me... resting the top of her head on my chest, closed her eyes, & waited.... waited for PETS...
She'd been begging me for cuddles!!! I cried. No, I'm not ashamed of that. I cried. I've had 4 birds in my lifetime... & not once have I ever seen one purr to this extent!
Now, I realize what's going on. It's Flash's "get me out & hold me!" call!
When she sees me come in from work, she begins purring immediately. I let her out of her cage, give her a cuddle & she's then content to play on her playpen for a while before moving on to the next adventure.
Anyone else have a crazy, purring, Amazon!?!
Our CAG would purr on rare occasion when getting hard pets down his back... but I am telling you - Flash is so different... she purrs to request lovins... not just once it's happening.
I am in love.
