Parrots
White bellied caique
Just saw this on Craigslist.... I'm so happy with this person, I just wanna cry. GOOD IDEA!!!!

Parrot Owners

Ant that information should be in every parrot advert. It makes me sick people just sell them to any old person for a quick dollar.

I'm glad that their are some sensible people out there! Thank you person on Craigslist! There are so many rehomed birds just because people see a colorful smart talking animal! I just saw an add that said I want a green cheek but don't want to pay so if you have one that you don't want, give it to me!!!:mad::mad: I was appalled! Even though green cheeks are small, they NEED LOTS of attention! They are not a toy to just freely throw around! Esh!

We should copy and paste it to the CL in our own individual areas. What do ya think?

That's what I was thinking too!!

great CL posting

Not to be a negative nancy, but i bet it gets flagged off by the backyard breeders, they cant have the truth be out there like that for anyone to see...

I just saw it, so I hope it stays up!

We have sites similar to CL in South Africa and I see people post the same type of comment/request! They're even bold enough to say that they can't afford to buy a cage and/or bird but "they'd really like one". And usually, these bold beggars ask for the bigger types of parrot - Macaws and toos.

My free-bird-wanted ad on CL put me in touch with the rescue I support and help, so it does work sometimes :)
And yes, I got my jenday and all my budgies for... you guessed it...

FREE

Birdy916 - good for you! Your birdies got lucky when you adopted them - even for free ;). Sadly, I think your type of "free bird" parront is in the minority. Most people who just want a bird for free won't give it the right care, I think.

By the way - my Percy was free too :). I didn't advertise for him but I adopted him from the previous owner at no charge whatsoever. The cost came AFTER I had him. Toys, cage, blah blah...you know how it goes :)

There are no bird breeders in Kansas and I doubt the average person from Kansas would be upset about this add. That isn't to say someone online would be mad about it. Maybe someday I can adopt a bird but I would never expect it to be free. I had a friend who adopted a female dog from a shelter. She had to pay 130 dollars but the dog had a vet checkup, updated on shots, etc and was spayed.

I'm visiting a friend in Nebraska and that's where the Craigslist add is from. :) Omaha, NE

Please research before you buy a Parrot. Some Parrots can live 50+ years. Parrots are flock animals and need LOTS of one on one attention. If a Parrot is not socialized with many different people they will attach themselves to one person and the possibility of biting (and they can break broom sticks with their beaks) is inevitable. Also keep in mind if you buy a Parrot for $1000+ and a cage for $600+ understand if the day comes you feel the need to rehome your Parrot you will most likely NOT make your money back. Please do not think if you buy a Parrot that a dept. store brand bag of food that says "Parrot Food" is healthy for the bird. Different species of birds have different diet requirements. Parrots are very smart and learn quickly, if they have bad behaviors it is most likely a learned behavior. If your Parrot is screaming, plucking or self mutilating it is most likely caused by poor diet, lack of stimulation or other underlying issues that is caused by their care. Parrots have the mentality of toddlers for life. If you are not prepared to care for a toddler for 50 years, rethink buying one. So many rescues are full of Parrots and rehoming a Parrot sometimes can take years. Caring for a Parrot is very expensive (Food requirements, Vet bills, toy replacement) and very time consuming. Please be more interested in finding your pet bird a good quality home and less concerned in how much you think you deserve for the bird. Send the bird to their new home with his/her cage to make the transition easier for the bird. If the person you are rehoming your bird to has knowledge of care for large birds then they also know the cost in caring for the bird. If someone is willing to take on those expenses then most likely they will care for the bird properly. Imagine thinking like a toddler and being apart of a family for 10 years to only go to a new family. I personally have adopted birds and paid rehoming fees and have helped with rescues. Now I have people offer me birds for free and have had to turn down birds. I have a network of other bird lovers who adopt, if you have a bird that you need to rehome and are more interested in finding it a loving home rather than recouping your expenses I may be able to help. I can not promise I can find it a home. I personally have 8 Parrots in my home so I will only adopt myself depending on the situation. Thanks for reading. I have seen so many Parrots up for rehoming, I wanted to throw a little education and understanding out there. Please do not send me any negative feedback this post was to simply try to educate.

It will be flagged down at some point, or just expire. That's what the ad said. If you should choose, post it on your local CL,

It also had a photo of a caique (looked like a white headed but it had some black near its eye and I'm not sure if maybe black headed start off white then get black?) and an African grey. :)

It looks like a baby white bellied caique. Meiko has black on his head but he's pure white belly. The juvenile white bellies have black on their heads until they mature sometimes. Also you can tell he's a baby by his yellow chest. :) Sorry, I know my caiques haha

It's exactly the sort of thing a "flipper" might post to make themselves seem legitimate.

Haha, well thanks JadeC. I don't know nuttin' 'bout caiques except I want one! Met a BHC at a pet store once, gosh, he was the goofiest, sweetest thing there was!

They weren't trying to sell any birds. I actually messaged her and said thank you for posting and she just legitimately seems to love and care about birds. She has a few rescue birds herself and just wants to post the information for people to see.

There have been times when I needed to rehome a small pet, guinea pigs, mice and even kittens that I saved, but was unable to keep. I always said there was a rehoming fee, but waited until people emailed me to get a feel. As soon as I felt I found a great home I gave them to them for free, cages supplies, everything. That doesn't mean you should say free in your ads, because you get all the crazies! But when I invested in the animals I did not expect to get any money back.

No she isn't selling any birds but it is a way to acquire them to sell.
and when you say she's only offering to help find new homes, I'll say that any new home she finds could just as easily be someone in on the scam.

I am in no way saying that she is trying to scam anyone to get free/cheap birds. I'm just saying that flippers don't advertise themselves as slimy resellers, they make themselves out to be legitimate caring people. Just ask whoever it was on this forum (it was shunt66) that rehomed a 'too to someone via craigslist after putting a lot of time and effort into the rehoming only to find that the new owner just resold the bird - and that's just one story. That discussion can be found here http://www.parrotforums.com/lost-found/37255-moluccan-s-cockatoo-sold-flipper.html

My whole point is that you can't just take what people post online at face value because the bad guys are probably better at faking being legitimate caring bird people than most people are at actually being legitimate caring bird people. People need to be careful.
