Hello! My little sun conure is 21 years old, working on 22. She recently hurt her wing while taking her out, it is not known how other than she hit it on possibly the bars. She is on medicine twice daily for her heart, arteries/veins and lungs. She has been in a bird e-collar and had a bandaged wing for 1 1/2 months. She was on 8 meds twice a day and is now on 5 so is out a bit to do that. It is strongly recommended to design something so her wings don't get hurt again that is soft and for older arthritic birds. She had a dislocated femur about 4 years ago so walks with a limp on the right and wing damage on the left. She recently had e-collar and bandage removed and just hit it again last night with a small scab and now we are treating it again but less aggressively as it is healing. She is super tolerant and is allowing me to apply Bag Balm and clean it. Any any any ideas for a soft cage that she and we can see through would be great. I am leaning towards making one out of plexiglass and bowing out some screening with a removable top to reach in to get her for her meds. She does not fly well. We have a wire fox terrier to free flying at all times is not an option. Any help at all is GREATLY appreciated. Thank you all so much.

I have great plexiglass cages made by Pennzoni Display company that are fantastic for disabled birds. They have 3 sizes, 24x24x32, 24x36x36 and 36x48x? . They are expensive but very well made with built in ventilation fans. You can make your own plexiglass cage but it's not easy, not much cheaper and won't be as well made. Google Pennzoni Displsy Compsny and you will see that they primarily make display cases for memorabilia etc but they are "bird people" so they also make these cages.

They are definitely expensive. I will have to find something different, softer as well. The hard sides are how she damaged her wing. She flutters and hits it on the side of the cage so I don't think these will work. I'm going to try to "bubble out" the sides...putting on my thinking cap. I appreciate your input so much! Thank you.

Not sure what you mean by bubble out the sides. Do you want a round cage?

Bubble wrap? it seams nothing will NOT harm the wing if bumped into. Its almost life you have got to get her to not fly at all...???

I can see wrapping everything you can with cotton batting but it still seams that could hurt a wing.
she is basically bumping her wing into something that is unmovable.

Maybe the largest size pak-o-bird - its soft(er) sided. Or some sort of soft side baby playpen w/netting sides? I dont think bubble wrapping the inside is a good idea - them are too addictive even for people to resist popping!

Welcome. Enjoy. Hopefully you'll find the help you need. I kinda wish there were avian therapists. The individuals trained and knowledgeable for when acute intervention need is decreased. Then rehab w safety needs to be done.

Im going to use my imagination. You could take a cage (about 24"x24" or 30"x20") remove the top wire section, and get one thin sheet of plexiglass, 24" high and long enough to bow into a semi circle that fits inside the cage. and use the cage as a stabilizer to hold the bowed sheet in place inside the large cage. Pieces of wood can be mounted to the left and right of the cage door to hold the plexiglass sheet in place. Leave the cage door area with the bars so you can access the inside. You can drill air holes and holes to attach perches or just hang everything from the top. Can you picture what I'm talking about? I attached a top view drawing.
Then put the top wire piece back on. Now you have a round plexiglass enclosure for your bird.
