Conures As Pets

I agree that comment was not ment to be mean so let me clear that up but birds are just like any other animal you can not say like 1 type of dog are cat is better then the other it is just the animals personality I have cats who love birds they will lay with them when they fall out of a nest until I put them back they have never had kittens all animals are different no two are alike

Oh no, thats exactly my point! Haha. But you can't deny that some species of birds are more likely that others to do certain things.

Macaws are undeniably louder than budgie's. Unless you happen to get that macaw that doesn't make a peep, not likely, but it happens.

All birds are different, but you need to appreciate 'species average' and know what to expect :)

I can't help it......i'm totally sold on the blue crowns. :) I heard a lot of this same 'stuff' when my Georgie (sun conure) died and I was heartbroken and thinking of my next bird (which was almost another sun but I thought it was almost spooky to have a bird who looked like her, in her cage, but a different personality, right after she died). Anyhow I was thinking I would go with a green cheek but there was no "click" with me and them. They are ADORABLE to the point of being crazy cute, but as soon as I saw the blue crowns, they just had the personality I wanted. I don't regret it at all. He is almost IDEAL for me. :)

Okay abigail, first off....Budgies ARE parrots...biggest pet peeve...if you have read most of my other threads you would know that I have lots of experience, fostering m2s, u2s, toucanets and and EVIL amazon...just to name a few... NOt saying that to be mean or snobby, i just wanted to tell you i DO have experience :)

As far as temperament goes, I'm totally in love with green cheek conures and it was the species recommended to me as a good starter bird/bird in general by just about everyone I asked (along with parakeets/budgies) Although they are considered 'quiet' they can definitely have their loud bursts. Peeko makes my ears ring when he screeches. Here's a video of him with me out of the room - this happens just about every time I leave the room for any length of time. I recommend watching the whole video because he has a variety of pitches and volumes when he gets loud.

I am leaning towards blue crowns, nanday, patty, or golden conures. NOt sure which though! Brian, thanks for your concern, but i just dropped $2.5k on a huge new aviary for my budgie.

I think conures are great birds - for deaf people :p

I think they're fantastic little guys but they (particularly sun conures and similar) are loud - and loud is generally okay - but they have a SCREECH.

So depending ony our tolerence for that, would then depend on whether I'd recommend a conure. I originally wanted a sun conure (before looking into senegals and meyers) but after spending time listening to them, I knew I'd be rehoming him before my door had even closed behind me!

Senegals and Meyers seemed the next logical choice, I looked into them in huge depth and decided that's what I wanted. Small, compact little birds with huge playful personalities and a screech that won't completely trash my hearing. :)

Hahaha I couldn't agree with you more. I love the size and the colors of a conure, so vibrant, beautiful birds. However, their calls would drive me crazy. I did a lot of research on the Sennie's, and I had a Myers a long time ago. Rio can be loud, but mostly she is such a quiet bird. Compared to conures she whispers. LOL :09:

My daughter has a gcc, being around him has made me fall in love with them! In fact we now have three adorable yellow sided (high red) green cheek babies. They are soooo adorable and I am going to have a hard time parting with them! LOL Gcc's are not loud and they have a great personality. They truly do think they are a big bird. However I believe you live fairly close to me and I know that my breeder currently has my rb2's clutch mates (two girls) and one slightly older male available. I'm just throwing it out there in case it was still something you are interested in.

Lil green cheek conures are so adorable.

Your dog was louder than you GCC, scared the h*ll out of me when it barked. LOL

Lmao, sorry about that :p Yes, the dogs bark louder, but Peeko's pitch is higher. I can honestly withstand the barking more than Peeko's screeching. He screeches for about 5-10 minutes intervals several times per day. Its difficult to ignore sometimes, but the personality and love he has makes it so worth it.
Funny thing, if my two dogs leave my room, Peeko screams until they come back, too. I guess he considers them part of his flock :)

Peeko is so cute. Gilbert just ran over to watch the video and said 'hello'. And wow, my sun would not have been that quiet unless sleeping, LOL. Even when not squawking, she liked ringing bells and stirring things up. I guess part of me likes their "muchness" using Mad Hatter terminology.

I missed him saying hello, but here he is watching Peeko ...and one of my little yappers is barking in the next room too.

That is too sweet!!! I wish Peeko showed any interest at all in other birds, even in videos. Gilbert is absolutely adorable!

Thanks. Gilbert loves watching YouTube videos of parrots. It cracks me up.

rurffledfeathers, gilbert is SUCH a cute name, and a BEAUTIFUL blue crown! My budgie is sitting there screaming at the screen (doesn't happen very often when budgies do scream, it is loud (LOUD screams for me occur once every 5 or 6 months)...louder than when you hear a normal budgie screaming with some chatter...ears are still ringing...

I recently got a sun conure myself. He is such a doll 90% of the day the other 10% is him screaming simply because I leave the room for 5 minutes. His scream can be deafening especially if he is on my shoulder and randomly lets out an almighty scream. Other than the occasional bit of noise he is a fun loving little sweetheart!

I have a green cheek conure and I couldn't be happier with my decision. I've wanted a Sun for YEARS but I don't think my husband could handle the noise, plus I have an elderly neighbour on one side and a couple with two toddlers on the other, so the noise wouldn't be ideal. Bandit's scream has some kick behind it, but he only ever screams like that when he can hear other birds, which most of the time are on the tv. A quick, short "bandit hush" shuts him up quick smart though.

Sorry, I do not mean not to offend you. I was not certain how many birds you had, etc. I have no doubt you will be fine in whatever bird you decide on. At the end of the day I can not tell you which type of bird to pick since only you can determine which bird is right for you.

Conures are a great group of parrots . I love their personalitys and how each species is unique . Nandays are known to be loud . Though each bird is different and you'll find that rare quiet nanday , most of the time they speak their native language . I'm getting a sun , so I don't mind the noise , but that's because I already have hearing problems :D Considering your experience and how much money you dropped for a aviary clearly shows that you could handle any conure with just a little species specific info :)

just a off topic question does anybodies budgies talk if so are they in a low voice ..... an once again all birds are different I would go with one that clicks with you the best part of having a bird is the bond you have with them

The place I bought my galah from has two Patagonian conures at the moment and they're really sweet looking birds, kind of remind me of Victorian gentlemen for some reason. The noise aspect of at least some of the conures is off-putting to me, they seem to be pitched at a frequency that I find more grating than other species groups, but I guess that's something that will differ for each individual.
