Hi all,
I am a complete newbie to the world of birds. Never had a pet bird and I’m gona try learn as much as I can here to make sure the new addition settles in well. He’s a Quaker parrot. Has been DNAd male. I’ve been told he’s 11 months old. Not sure it that’s true or not. I’m going to look through the posts and see if I can get some advice. We have decided to name him popcorn. It’s his fav treat well so far. I make it fresh no oil no salt. He just loves it. Always manage to entice him back into his cage. I don’t give him much as I’m sure it’s probably still not the healthiest for him even with no oil or salt.
I’ve looked at a few YouTube posts so I’m trying not to use my hands too much yet. Just letting him get used to me. So far he rarely flies when out of his cage just climbs around like a little money bird!! He isn’t overly keen on being touched but will come close to take food from my hand. He will rarely sit up on my daughters shoulder and nibble at her hair and her ear. Tickling not hurting at all.
He’s fairly quiet most of the time which seems to be not the norm. I’m hoping it’s just until he settled in he’s been here a week. Slowly getting a little nosier but not much. Apart from today he was quiet vocal. I don’t know him well enough yet to figure out if he was happy angry or maybe scared of the Xmas decs.
The guy we got him from isn’t the most reputable. In fact it was the reason we took him. Even tho I have no idea I’m happy to learn and try show him the love he needs. Before he lived in a cage in a back garden shed I couldn’t bare to leave him. Only had interaction with people for cleaning cage and changing food. It’s awful.
I’ve a feeling he might be older that we think but can’t be sure. If he is older will it still be possible to train him to step up and interact a little with us? Not worried about if he ever says words. Would just like to know if an older bird might be able to get settled and happy enough to fly around and maybe sit on my shoulder occasionally.
