Hey! I have a two year old male Senegal parrot. Recently we have been to the vet and he recommended that I get another Senegal so they keep company to each other. I don’t want to get a female one cause I don’t want them to breed. What’s everyone’s opinion about getting another male Senegal or even a Poicephalus? Of course I’ll make sure they are separated in the beginning but I work a lot of hours outside of home and I don’t want my little one to feel lonely, hence brining him a companion. Thanks for all your responses!

I understand you wanting your bird to have a companion when you aren't around but you must want another bird, too, because the two may not even like each other. I've read in several places at Senegals are pretty independent for parrots and don't interact much with each other except to breed. Of all parrots, they seem to be the species most content without other avian company. See LaFeber and Parrot Bliss websites for this information.

If your Senegal does make friends with another bird, you may end up losing some of the close bond you have with him and I don't think you want that. You also need to consider that working with and developing a bond with a second parrot can be much more challenging when they have the first bird for company.

I hope Others give their opinions. This is a big decision.
