Hello all im a new member looking for some advice i recently lost my 30 year old lesser sulphur cockatoo due to she got very egg bound and had to have operation to remove which she surprisly came around from and couple weeks on the mend she wasnt herself but still was what seemed like coming round but after two weeks one early morning i found her stone cold dead at bottom of her cage absoulty heart broken as the night before we were playing and cuddling so a.very big shock as she seemed on the mend anyway that little bird was my first and the reason i do animal and bird rescusing and im autistic so she was my therapy bird so im really struggling without her and im now questioning my entire lifes choices. Guess what im trying t get to is id desperatly like anothrr too but i was lucky with her she wasnt a screamer maybe twice a day for 5s if i walked away from her and didnt damage anything ive been looking into anothr too be most likely another lesser or a galah or goffins my main.question here was my last girl was a extremly bad plucker as very bad abusive arseholes owners for 20+ years before she was rehomed and im concered may happen with next too i had a idea to get a galah and either lesser or goffin and introduce together and keep togethrr in large cage big enough for macaws nevermind little toos to hopefully prevent any plucking or bad behaviours and handle and interact with daily for 4-6 everyday my birds get out to exercise and i interact with them and to prevent the pair pf toos bonding i dont have a issue if they do but to still be tame enough with me. Just as leaving for work etc i could see the heartbreak in my little cockatoo lucky for her she came nearly everywhere with me but i feel i cant do that as often nowadays why i mentioned about a unrelated different types being togther? Or if got just one what type..... i think ive ruled out the big U2s etc stick to smaller toos. Any advice be much appreciated a very hard time for me losing her ao trying to keep distraced. Many thanks Sam:yellow1::white1:)

Hi sorry for your loss, I'd recommend a galah cockatoo, I got my girl as a hand reared baby and although she loves humans she can be totally independent and enjoys doing her own thing I've kinda tought her that way , as I don't want a really demanding neurotic bird that needs to be with me every second or she will scream and pluck, I take her out play with her ,talk to her every day but not every second of every day , she's happy and can entertain herself with her numerous toys etc in her cage for hours , she eats vegetables, pellets, seeds nuts , beans , pasta loves tonibble at grass! And jyst started to enjoy shredding paper up lol .. she's quirky ,playful, independent, loving and a delight to have I think its the way teach them when young just don't teach them that they have to be on you evety single second bonding is wonderful but not to the extent u can't leave your bird for a hour or she will pluck or scream! I'm sure its the same with any parrot type . Good luck ...oh I'm also from the Scottish highlands lol

I didn't know that LOL, why not put it in on the top right hand side in your header. It's great to know where in the world people are. :)

Sam, very sorry for your loss. It is always difficult and takes an undefined period of time to grieve. Be kind to yourself, knowing you'll never forget.

I personally prefer cockatoos, and find the Goffins to be my best match. The smaller toos are often less needy/neurotic but are capable of deep bonds. Many devoted fans of Galahs here, but don't overlook the Bare Eyed, Citron, or even another LSC.

Hello everyone thank you very much for your thoughts and advice after my lesser cockatoo i will always have a love for toos after much reasearching and still thinking i reckon it will be a goffins or a galah i dont think i could have another lesser or citron remind her to much of Pip (passed too) new chapter and all that it will be a baby i go for as do so much rescusing of older problematic abused birds my youngest is 15 so i would just like to have one baby of my own and not a older bird with its habits and what it has learned etc you get what im meaning 😊i shall upload photos when eventually make my decsion. Thank you all. Its hard for my family & friends to understand why im deeply upset at this lose not animal people really so its nice to know people out there that understand the bond a human and bird can have and how hard a lose can be. Thanks Sam & the furry feathery gang :greenyellow::green1::blue1::yellow1::green::)

How would any owners of Galahs and Goffins some them up? My lesser unfortualy came to me as a very bad plucker mainly head and neck as you can see from my profile photo she was very needy anytime heard movement whistling for me she spent most her time with me which i have no issue with as i dont go out very often other than work. Shes was extremly affectionate always kisses and rubbing against my beard lol just in general a snuggly bird many a time we fell asleep watching tv and shes proper snuggled up, never had any "hormoan crazed months" in the years i owned her always lovely well to me anyone else nope id hate to meet the mugger that tried to mug me with little pip on my shoulder , she wasnt overly noisey would whistle along to radio and with the big amazon boy, when wanted my attention and randomly would scream quite loud but only for about 3 times they would vary from 0-6 times a day and sounded like a loud ass phone ringing, she was absoulty perfect with my flock and other animals, i could pop her down while i pottered around but she was more needy and super glued to me she even came to the shops with me signs dont say no parrots or ferrets so i take full advantage adventures for all lol are galahs or goffins similar or more independant ive never met another cockatoo to compare i had thought on ekkies i want a more chilled out bird and yet i love cockatoos! My meyers and pionus and jardine very chill and quiet aswell and happy to be on me and wander off and do their own stuff and come to.me when they want back to cage or a head rub or randomly attack me ahh parrots its the parrotlets that are loud chatterboxes. yes Ecelectus i love the females but had a pair in the past but were avairy outdoor untame birds and the hen was one big angry ass red bully kinda scared me she looked so mad where as male was lovely such a wuss friendly other than another cockatoo leaning towards Galah..Eclectus,grey,senegals,blue headed pionus they all seem to suit my lifestyle and a good addition to my exsiting flock. Sorry that was a huge message i got on a birdy rant apoligies. Sam

really sorry for your loss. I have at least a small understand of where you're coming from as I'm on the spectrum too. I would advise to take some time before getting another or it can make things worse for you. Take time to focus on other aspects of your life and then when you're not as emotionally beaten down commence looking

Stay strong buddy

I've had a male goffin/bare eyed hybrid named Jasper who passed suddenly and now a female galah with another female galah coming home next week. When I lost Jasper I couldn't stomach getting another little white too because it would remind me of my sweet boy so I went with Layla the Galah. Both are very different. Jasper was non stop fun. Loved acrobatics, never aggressive, beautiful feather and he adore the family. He was clingy when out of his cage and always busy. Layla is more laid back in personality. She is still goofy and funny but she is much better at entertaining herself when she needs to. Jasper was a bit more vocal than Layla. He'd contact call more often ane Layla tends to quietly jabber and sing to herself. Both can be loud though while playing a couple times a day. Both talk pretty well. I was head over heels with Jasper and I feel the same about Layla but now that I've had both I think Layla fits in even better than Jasper did because it's easier for me to juggle her needs and being a busy mom of 4 kids, 3 dogs and 4 horses needs because she is so willing to play by herself when out of the cage. I can honestly say though that I have had good luck with my little cockatoos. Can't imagine life without one. sorry for your loss. I know how heartbreaking it is.

How would any owners of Galahs and Goffins some them up?

Sam, I understand why you are seeking a smaller too. Pip was incredibly special, and another LSC might be awkward.

Goffins are a unique blend of cuddly, fun, witty, and bold. They are among the smallest of toos with big clown-like personalities that often dance, twirl about, and hop. They are extremely cuddly yet won't pester you once they have a dose of attention. Goffins can be independent, an important quality when your attention must be elsewhere. Talking ability tends to be minimal.

Agree 100% with Scott! The year or so I had Jonesy "the cockatoo man" was...interesting...to say the least  He hopped like a kangaroo..spun around in circles..danced like mad to Pink Floyd..and said just a few words ( mostly cussing from his previous human )
sighhhh...he is doing well in his new home now :)

Hi there!

I am so sorry for your loss. It is so hard when despite everything you do, things still happen. Take comfort in knowing that your too very much loved and appreciated you, and now with her passing you can give a wonderful home to another bird.

I just want to comment on the galah question. We got ours from a shop when he was about a year old. This was a very reputable shop that I volunteered at for a long time. I think as devoted exotic bird shops go, they were good. Unfortunately, I can't imagine there is a one that truly prepares you for the ups and downs of parrot ownership.

When I met Lina, I fell in love. Sweetest, cuddliest bird in the shop, without a doubt! I researched a lot on galahs, and from all aspects they seemed to be portrayed as nigh the 'perfect companion parrot'. Well, galahs, like all parrots and all animals, can, will, and do have their behavioral problems.

I found out the hard way that galahs seem to go through a phase where they become 'phobic', afraid of everything and everyone, including those who have poured love, care, and attention into them. I don't have any solid evidence but I would bet that this is what happens when they come to sexual maturity.

Please read this before endeavoring on any galah excursions:
http://www.parrotforums.com/cockatoos/70165-lina-s-journal-road-rehabilitation.html

Galahs very much are independent and relatively quiet from my experience. Their funny 'alarm calls' do not pierce my ears the way other cockatoos do. However, due to their independent trait, they also have a tendency to be less cuddly. I just wouldn't want anyone to purchase/adopt a galah wanting a snuggle bug, because you are likely to get the opposite. Other cockatoos tend to hold truer to the 'snuggly' description.

If I ever adopted a cockatoo of my own (Lina is my mothers), I would most likely go for a goffins or bare eyed.

There was a LOVELY bare eyed at the shop. He was HILARIOUS! He loved his foot toys, and you would often find him rolling around on his back, flinging them enthusiastically. He liked to yell and say "quakers!", so his name was 'Quackers' like the sound a duck makes. He was LOUD for sure, significantly louder than our Lina, which may have been why I never fell in love with him as I could not handle the ear piercing that happened a few times daily. By comparison, the occasional 'kraaawk!' of a macaw every few hours never bothered me.

A single mom bought him, she had a teenaged daughter. The daughter spent every waking minute with him. One day, they brought home a new bird, and she left him in the cage and ignored him. He started screaming, so they moved his cage to a back room, until his screaming became so chronic that they brought him back to the shop. The poor guy was never the same after that, at least in the months I saw him.

I don't remember any goffins in the shop but for the one time. That little girl was sweet beyond measure, and she was sold within days of being taken to the shop by an owner who could no longer care for her. Goffins sound like they might be in the top list for great companion parrots, but I don't have enough personal experience with them to say for sure.

Just like to add that the 'neurosis' in RB2's can and does happen at any time, it is just what the trigger that sets it off is. These funny birds can also have a very different personality with anyone in their human flock. They are fairly strong willed. My friends RB2 loves his mum and dad and his Nana and me, his holiday mum. He has a different relationship with all of us, just wants cuddles from me, to play with his mum, scritches from his dad and sits looking adoringly at his Nana.

I have been lucky with Plum he only does the RB2 screech when something upsets him or he really wants some of my dinner and isn't getting any. My friends RB2 does it a lot. It is important that their diet is controlled as they are prone to fatty liver disease and IMO should therefore never be clipped. Another friend with a RB2 has problems with hers hormonal plucking, again his personality is totally different again.

No wish to put you off, but they are definitely not all the same. These two threads show you that LOL. These are all 'boys' so perhaps the 'girls' are less trouble LOL?

I've been reading a lot on phobic Galahs. I do see that it's almost always the boys. I wonder why that is?! So far my girl has zero issues even though I'm owner number three (dare I even say she's an easy cockatoo to own and love). I hope my new female baby grows up as well adjusted as Layla but I'll be watching close for any signs of phobic behaviors. What I've read seems heartbreaking for owner and bird. :(

My word that is sad, Layla only three y/o and you are third owner. Guess it took a while to find her forever mommy?

I feel it is probably unlikely in your 'girls', perhaps it is something to do with the type of bonding the males make with their main human at a guess. Remember also that RB2's are raised in a completely alien way by humans. In the wild they are passed over to be cared for in a birdie creche, they are looked after, kept in line by other older non breeding members of the flock.

That totally could be true! I'm unsure 100% on Laylas age but owner number 2 said about 3. It is sad she was passed around so much in those 3 short years but you'd never know it! She immediately adjusted to life here and shows zero signs of any issues from all the moves. I feel very lucky with her. Her bond with me is different than my recently passed male goffin hybrid. His connection was a deep one to me. Layla is more my equal in her mind. And although picky about who she likes, she treats all her favorite humans basically the same. I prefer this type of bond actually. She seems content and confident luckily.

It sounds good to me.

Did you find out the hoo ha on what happened to Layla before?

Layla was well cared for and loved by both previous homes and came from an excellent parrot store in Sacramento originally.circumstances and life changes caused her uprooting to new homes. Original owner went through a divorce and couldn't keep her. Owner number 2 adored her but was going to be switching from a working at home job to a traveling position. He didn't want Layla to be caged all day every day while he was away since she was accustomed to being out and about all day. We found each other and she's in her forever home now:).

ETA. I even lost a $700 deposit I had on a baby because I decided Layla was the one for me. :). I haven't seen another Rose Breasted listed on Craigslist since I bought her. I kinda feel like it was fate.
