Cockatiel taming

Hi there I am new to the while thing so sorry if I posted it in the wrong place.
So I have a few questions so bear with me.

I recently got a new cockatiel. Her name is moana[emoji16]. This is not the first time I had a parrot but this time it is mine and not the whole family's one. So basically what I am saying is that I know about the basic caring of a parrot but I have some questions.

First and foremost how could I tame a her. I have researched for so long but could not find something that could help me. The problem is my she is really scared of my hands. She opens her mouth and hisses every time I come close to her cage. She also won't take anything out of my hand from the outside of the cage. So I am really confused on how to tame her to say the least.

The next question is: is it necessary to cover the cage. Again when I eant to cover the cage at night she hisses and goes crazy but only until I have closed it and then she calms down.

And what treats can I give her and what should I include in her diet. Currently I am feeding her sunflower seeds and I know it is not great to just feed that but I dont know what else to feed her.

Also I have taken her out of the cage about 4 times and it is always such a mission to het her back. At the moment what I am doing is getting her to step up on a perch and then putting her in the cage. But the thing is she kills that stick before she decides to get on it so I am wondering if there isn't a better way to do it?

I was hoping someone would answer soon... for cocktails get millet...it's like crack to them.

someone is going to send you the link for building trust with birds, read it.

also spend time with the cage open, hang out near it with millet.....

others over the next day will have some good ideas, but in the meantime.....open door, have some millet....it won't hurt.

the biggest things I would say would be to keep movement slow around them and not to constantly look at them. They are very scared right now and you need to prove you're not scary. Try reading a book in the room with them, they'll get interested after a while.

The first thing is to be bale to get your hand touching the cage without them being scared, then to put some millet in their cage so they can try it out. After they like it you can take it out and just hold it against the cage bars, after a while they'll slowly come over to try it. Once they're happy/confident doing that then you can work on step-up training with a stick. When using the perch to get them back in do you give them an incentive to get on the stick? They most likely will attack it if you just push it at them, I know I'd be annoyed

just keep calm and let them get used to you, it's a long process and make sure you're slow. Never grab them to bring them out as it'll only hurt the relationship, just leave the door open when they can come out and close the door before covering the cage. I prefer covering as you can simulate their natural day cycle easier

Thanks, the way I get her out of the cage is just opening the door and waiting for her to come out by herself. She really enjoys it outside her cage the only problem I have is getting her back. Any ideas? I am thinking of maybe luring her in with some millet but will try tomorrow.

The only thing I am worrying about is that I am scaring her by using the perch to take her back to the cage. Thanks for the replies guys.

Hi there Dillian,

What you are doing is good keep it up. Cockatiels take a while to trust. If she's the only one you've got in the cage. Sit next to the cage with your hand in it for a while, while talking to her at the same time. She will get used to you. She may never stop hissing that's a natural defence mechanism. I have one that hisses then jumps on my finger problem.

You need to either buy a mixed seed (we use a peachface mix) for her, instead of just sunflower seeds. (Can be dangerous as only food supply) we have started feeding ours fresh corn on the cob in small doses and done leafy greens also. Wee also collect fresh grass and grass seeds to put in the cage. They love it.

She will settle down it'll just take some time. A pic would be great.
