Greetings,

Brief history. My girlfriend has owned a cockatiel before and loves birds, she has also had experience with a double yellow headed amazon. I myself have never owned a bird but I am an animal lover and I do find these crazy little critters fascinating.

After a long absence with birds she is really getting the itch to get another.

Recently, she came across a “blue mountain rainbow lory” and asked me to go see it with her. This particular bird was EXTREMELY friendly. Eager to meet new people, loved to be touched and jumped right up onto our fingers. Sex is unknown and it was hatched in mid July.

Not being a bird expert and as already stated not even a novice for that matter I’m looking for some answers to some questions I have and every bit as important other things I may have not considered here.

Would this particular bird be a good choice for US?

How noisy are these birds and how noisy are they compared to others?

I have already “experienced” there droppings. I have nice laminated wood floors in my house. Has anybody experienced any troubles with their particular droppings causing laminated floors to stain or mar them in some such manner?

At what temperature range should the house be kept?

How expensive is the nectar compared to seed?

Regarding the nectar, I have read when feeding them it that it’s only good for a couple hours and then it’s time to make a new batch. Is it possible to make a big batch and just refrigerate it?

If not, how many times a day do you need to make it and feed it to them?

As I understand it these birds do NOT eat seeds. Obviously then, when sleeping or away from home one won’t be able to just leave seed for them to munch on. I take it they are going to be o.k. with some fruit and water during these times?

Thanks for any help you can provide and nice forum you have here.

Hi there, welcome to the forum!!! :) Its wonderful to see that you want to find out everything there is before purchasing any bird. I dont own a lori but I have no doubt that there are members on the forum who can guide and assist you. There are many different forum sections that you can read through pertaining to all aspects of general and specific bird care. Good luck!! :) :)

Grrr I wrote this all out for you last night and then my batterie died

Anyways welcome to the forum

1stly I will start with the food issue as it seems to be your main concern
These birds do not eat seed EVER that's number 1 rule
as far as the nectar goes you Now also have an alternative
specialized pellets designed just for lorries ( kaytees is 1 I know of ) this has several advantages in that it takes longer to go thru the system so less poop and it's alot firmer to , also less mess with prep and being flicked around cage etc
he can be converted onto these if he is already on a nectar diet
if you wish to stay with the nectar however there are 2 components to it
a dry mix which is feed all day long and just topped up ( full change 2x week)
and the wet mix ( best fed at night if you work) this is mixed up daily and should be left for no more than 4hrs ( less in warmer areas)
they can live soley on dry mix for a few days ( for vaccation sake ) but it is never advised to leave your birds alone for longer than 24hrs
even if it's a friend who just pops in checks food and water etc it will do until you get back ( but it's always best to take them if you can )

I do not know of the poo damaging any surfaces but I always clean it asap

Fruit and vege is still a very important part of diet for these guys

As far as noise goes it depends what you Want to compare them with
every bird is noisey in it's own right
a Lorri has more of a constant chatter to them with out bursts of loudness every so often
as compared to an amazon who may be quite the majority of time but you your neighbours and anyone walking past all know that the bird is making noise
yes ! Lorries can be loud and it takes a bit of getting used to the constant chatter but generaly it's not an unpleasant / ear piercing noise

Lorries are bundles of fun and right little clowns they LOVE attention and you'll find most problems arise when they think they should get attention and you have got to go to work or go to party or even go to work lol
it's all about starting out as you intend it to be for years to come

Many people start by giving an abundance of love and playtime to these guys for the 1st few months and once the novelty wears off the bird gets less attention and starts to react negativly ( sqwarking biting etc ) so as I say start as you intend to finish

Hope this has helped you a little and feel free to pm me for more advise etc
I do not own any at current but have in the past they are mavelous little birds
