Rest in Peace Rio
Both River and Pepper seem to find clothespins fascinating. There's always a lot around because I use them to clip the blankets to their cages. Does anybody know what kind of wood they are generally made from? (my guess was pine since it's cheap?) I was thinking if it's safe I could get some and take them apart (throw out the metal part) to use for toy making. Anybody use clothespins for toys before?

River likes to snatch them up from his seed catcher where I sit them when he's uncovered. He doesn't chew them, but likes to hold them and pump his leg up and down. Too cute, he looks like he's lifting weights! Of course then he throws them all on the floor for a game of "mommy fetch!" Pepper loves tearing up wood toys, so it would be great for toys for her.

I know you can get 'parted' ones from the craft store.. they're supposed to be safe for children..

Merlin is forever playing with them, we get a big bag of them for like £2 or something and he just loves playing with them. We got Merlin a bag around when we first got him and we still have some pegs left, he loves them but they seem to last him a long time. Unsure what wood it is, think it's pine and safe. Merlins never seemed to have any problems with them, I'm pretty sure I checked the wood when I bought it, but can't remember what it was now. Sorry!

Great idea...i'm sure they'd love a toy made out of one! Let us know what you come up with, pic? : )

Amigo has been demolishing them for a couple years now. I believe they must be made of a safe wood or he would have had some side effects by now.

Thanks all! I'm going to get a bag for toy making/shredding. :)

Con is The Bird of Doom to clothespins. She likes the old fashion ones without the metal and I do too. I stick them all over her cage and she spends a good hour or two running around tearing them up and throwing them about. If you have a hobby store, you can check out their wood working area. They have all kind of little bits that make great bird toys. Another of Con's favorite are the small thimbles she can hold and chew apart with her beak.

I, too, have given the wooden parts to my birds. I like the all wooden "peg" types, but, you cannot often find those.

I, too, buy the little wooden parts from the hobby store. I make toys from them, replace parts that have been chewed off toys, and Pete loves any little wood things he can hold in his foot and chew into splinters.

Thank you for this suggestion, I wouldn't have thought of it on my own. Sounds like a fun and affordable toy. I'll be picking some up tomorrow.
