Getting a cockatiel
Iā€™m in need of actual recipes of chop for a parakeet and a cockatiel, itā€™s bizarre how hard itā€™s been to find even one actual recipe! Iā€™m new to owning birds and I want to do this right, following a recipe would help me greatly and winging it later. Any and all that youā€™ve got since Iā€™d Change it up for them!

Not a recipe, but hereā€™s a tip: look at the Dirty Dozen list to see which fruits and veggies you should buy organic/grow yourself. https://www.ewg.org/foodnews/dirty-dozen.php

When it comes to budgies and cockatiels, I rarely feed them fruit (I find they donā€™t tend to like fruits as much, plus they tend to eat greens and seeds in the wild instead of fruits). The majority of chop should be veggies, and I might add a small amount of organic apple. Before giving them a serving of chop, you can provide a tiny amount of organic berries (a freshly chopped strawberry, a quartered blueberry, etc.). Pomegranate arils keep quite well, so you can also add them to your chop after youā€™ve ā€œchopped your chopā€.

I also like adding finely minced carrot since itā€™s a great source of vitamin A (among other nutrients), adds a pop of colour, and it adds a touch of sweetness. It also keeps well and doesnā€™t get gross as the chop ages in the fridge. It also lasts longer in their dishes before getting gross (it does turn brown like an apple, doesnā€™t need to be removed after an hour or two like berries and grapes do, doesnā€™t wilt, etc.).

Thank you so much!

I start with Bird Street Bistro Hearty Vegetables flavor dried mix of grains and vegetables and follow the instructions on the bag to prepare it.
I add things to the dried product before cooking. When I make a whole bag, I add 1/2 cup each of tricolor Quinoa, brown rice, and tiny pasta acini di pepi.
After the mixture is cooked I add
One head of broccoli finely chopped
Two red bell peppers finely chopped
One 1 Oz bag of Kaytee Bird Greens
One can of whole kernel corn
Mix well.

I divide the batch into small ziplock freezer bags with a few days worth in each bag.

I promise you be tempted to eat this stuff yourlrself, it's so good.

Wow! Thank you so much!!

I forgot to tell you to add more water to the dry mix to accommodate the quinoa rice and pasta per instructions on the packages.
