Parrots
Amy a Blue Front 'Zon
Jonesy a Goffins 'Too who had to be rehomed :-(

And a Normal Grey Cockatiel named BB who came home with me on 5/20/2016.
...I like Chinese food occasionally...every few months or so,and last night I had a hankering for some moo goo gia pan, steamed dumplings, rice and an egg roll. Of course I share with the kids :)
I made a small plate for Beebs with a few chunks of carrot, water cress, pea pod, a 'shroom,a bit of rice and chicken, and dug out a bit of the egg roll for the boy and put his plate on his roof top.
Now normally,he wont eat anything unless it is directly off MY plate.
I sat down on the couch to watch the local news, and Amy had already stuffed her face in her nummy bowl.
BB climbed up to his roof and looked at his dinner plate..pick..pick..pick...MUNCH MUNCH MUNCH CHOW CHOW CHOW ...he dug in with gusto lol...I swear he was at his plate for ten minutes :D

does anyone else 'teil make noises while they eat?? He was being very vocal while noshing away..maybe he is part Asian?

Jim

Gosh this is making me hungry. Chinese is yukky over here IMO, will not eat it anymore, yours sounds nice.

But I am a "fun guy"...fungi...get it??

Thanks Plum for the info..I had no idea...another reason I love this place..learn stuff everyday :)
No more 'shrooms for my kids!

Jim

Yes Jim, everyone of us agrees you are definitely a 'fun guy' and love ya for it!

BTW it's 'K', Plum is ripping up his cage trying to find some more food!!!!

I don't mean to be a party pooper but chinese food is EXTREMELY high in sodium not to mention eggrolls are deep fried in grease (highly detrimental to arteries amongst other things).

I would avoid feeding little Beebs people foods like that it's just not worth it. I know he means the world to you and those types of unhealthy foods affect him greatly... tiels are such incredibly tiny birds they cannot handle all that sodium and grease etc. When I make chinese at home it's oil free as I cook with NO oil but I do put salt in it which is a huge no no for them.

I'd give him healthy things like steamed peas, carrot, potatoes, rice etc on the side without sodium/grease etc.. trust me... if you stop constantly allowing him to eat off your plate he will stop if you give him his own healthy serving on the side... or at least put it off to one side of your plate for him :)

I'd always have some of those healthy foods I can heat up in 3 seconds to give them.

so it's not just the ones near me!

I got so annoyed by it I learnt to cook chinese food myself, so much better when it's fresh!

Sounds like BB is picking up on Amy's eating habits:33:

I also forgot to add there is absolutely NOTHING wrong with putting a little pink himalayan salt in your food for example or soy sauce etc... but what is considered a little amount of salt for a human is an overwhelming amount for such an incredibly tiny bird to handle and chinese foods from restaurant have alarmingly high levels of sodium in it not to mention grease. I never ever allow my tiels to eat food that I have added sodium to.

No more people food. Keep BB healthy so he's around for a long time :) Beebs depends on you for his health.... he doesn't understand what's OK for him to eat or not.

I am unsure about cockatiels being old world parrots from AU, as it is becoming more apparent different species from different regions have varying nutritional needs, but many new world parrots instinctively eat a sodium rich clay in nature. Due to low sodium content in many inland dwelling parrots native to the amazons diet, they can actually become sodium deficient. I would imagine that could also translate to a deliberate zero sodium diet provided by their carer in captivity as well). Researchers are now hypothesizing one of the biggest draws of the clay for parrots native to the parts of the world it forms is the sodium content and that it in fact benefits their overall health! Sodium is essential to all life, just in sensible quantities. Interesting reading, if you're interested:

Wanted to add, I don't think extremely sodium (and MSG) laden junk food is good for birds or should be routinely in their diet, but I also think a couple veggies out of a stir fry won't spell the end for a parrot on an otherwise healthy diet (except mushrooms, those are known to give a bird tummy upsets).

Wow...my bad...:(...looks like he can't have anything he likes..( like me!)
All the "good" things I try to feed him,he either just takes a nibble at,or thumbs his beak to it (except sweet tater's and oat meal, and an occasional Ramen noodle without the "flavor" packet).

Back to the drawing board I guess....

Jim

Have you tried a simple chop for Beebs Jim? Grated carrot, peas, beans, sweet potato? If this is OK add to it?

Grated carrot, peas, beans, white potatoes, sweet potatoes are great for them... so is rice etc. There are TONS of nutrients (nutrition) in white potatoes....
yes I said white potatoes: [ame="https://youtu.be/0PgBL8f87FE"]Potatoes: The perfect food - John McDougall MD - YouTube[/ame]

Jim, seriously check out the documentary I just sent you a link to in my prior post regarding "What The Health". Your tiel is getting plenty of sodium when he chews on his cuttle bone... there is natural sodium in his bird seed mix and/or pellets. The birds in the wild cannot be compared to that of a domesticated bird. To feed your tiel such foods with extremely high levels of sodium, not to mention grease and cholesterol is NEVER beneficial to your tiel. Those are disease promoting foods.

Just keep things simple, give him healthy whole foods that do not contain such additives. Don't make something so simple into something more complicated than it has to be :)

Check out "The China Study" by Dr. Colin T. Campbell, "Forks Over Knives", "Cowspiracy" etc. Food is my medicine!

Be cautious when reading random "studies". Most of the studies conducted are biased and controlled by the very industry that are posed to gain benefit in their wallet.

he doesn't have a cuttle bone...I was told it was not necessary

Actually, amotoxin poisoning is not a problem with the mushrooms we eat, it's from Amanita (death cap, destroying angel) mushrooms:

Amatoxin Toxicity: Background, Pathophysiology, Etiology

An article on Scientific American website claims regular white button mushrooms are not a significant danger, plus they confer anti-cancer benefits.

https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/raw-mushrooms-hazardous-or-harmless/

The biggest risk with mushrooms is actually the pesticide/insecticide residue from the chemicals used to grow them. Thiabendazole is mutagenic and toxic and the last time I looked, which is five years ago, I think it was found in something like half all button mushrooms tested. I don't eat many mushrooms, but they are worth getting as organics if you can.

Here's a list of what you can spray mushrooms with if you are a grower.

Pesticides for Agaricus Mushroom Production ? Mushrooms ? Penn State Extension

.... should have guessed ...

Are we even still talking PARROTS? Are you saying that parrots can eat mushrooms (all) without any damage to their health or organs?

There is Chinese food, and then there is Chinese food! Fast-food sources are loaded with salt, sugar, and MSG. You have no choice but to order from the pre-made vats of sogginess. A prepared-to order dish *can* be made healthier if the cook is willing to subtract some of the offending items. While this does impact the flavor, if you like "hotness," substituting hot sauces for the others mentioned is a win-win.

I've found Vietnamese food is often a better alternative. Tends to have less oil and may restaurants post "No MSG" signs.

Bottom line, these highly processed foods are not good for birds. If you must, a very tiny bit is all IMO they should endure.

There are a few toxic mushroom varieties, however mushrooms that can be eaten by people are also considered safe for pets. Do not offer false morel (Gyromitra) mushrooms to your bird — or eat them yourself for that matter.

Cooking can render these mushrooms less toxic, but it does not completely eliminate the potential danger of death.

You decide!
