Cockatiel
Hi everyone,
I have cockatiel chicks dying a couple of days after hatching due to the wooden shaving bedding. The material keeps getting stuck in the chick's beaks and nostrils and they don't survive.

What are the best low-dust wooden shaving materials that could be used in the cockatiel breeding box?

Has anyone had any success with the following bedding materials:
Aspen shavings
Pine Shavings
Shredded paper

Please let me know your recommendations on the best bedding materials that is less likely to get stuck in the young chick's beak.

Thank you.

For my Cockatiels I first used hamster shavings/beading.
The Cockatiels shoved it all out of there nest box.

Then they shredded the bottom of their nest box (it was made out of cardboard). This turned out to be a disaster of a different kind. One of the babies fell through the bottom of the cage and died .

After that I reinforced with double thick cardboard and (this was back in 2016 and didn’t remember exactly) I think I used paper towels or newspaper.

The parents always poop outside the nest but the babies don’t/can’t so as the babies get older the bedding needs to be changed more frequently.

I could not tell from the photo what was on the baby’s beak, it could have just been food from the parents and have nothing to do with the wood chips/beading.
I doubt a baby bird would be capable of eating on its own.
Popeye my male baby raised in our house had his eye stuck closed with food residue. That’s how he got his name.

Not enough info but it could be the parents are inexperienced and not feeding the babies correctly.

If any are still alive they may need to be pulled out and go with strictly hand feeding.
