Two Cockatiels: Rascal (Geraldine) and his baby brother named Coconut!
I finally got tropical fabric to make my evening cage cover. I had it cut to size and them took it to seamstress to sew it together. Now CooCoo'Nut can dream of being in the tropics as he sleeps :D

I had Rascal in that cage with 'Nut last night as I was watching TV with the LIGHTS ON and Rascal of course had a massive "night fright episode" and this nearly KILLED 'Nut as I had 2 birds thrashing violently inside the cage it was VERY scary!!! I saw the entire thing happen Rascal FREAKED for NO REASON whatsoever!!! They simply cannot ever even be in the same cage together (not at night at least) because Rascal really does have "mental issues" he is far too unpredictable... it's very sad... again this NEVER EVER used to happen with Rascal until I got a second tiel... it's very much still a big problem!!! :( I plan to TEMPORARILY clip Rascal soon to see if that might help protect 'Nut since then "Nut will no longer have Rascal FLYING around in full blown panic attacks. Hopefully when "Nut gets older and more experienced he can handle these episodes caused by Rascal but he definitely cannot right now. He's still a young baby.

Very nice cage and cute cover, Juliet.

"Nuts new cover has me thinking of Hawaii lol :) Very nice!

BB has been experiencing night frights also. I don't cover his cage or Amys, and there is nothing in my house that should "frighten" him

None of my birds has ever done this before, and it makes me uneasy, knowing cockatiels a prone to such things

I leave home at 5:00pm to be at work for 6:30,and work a 12 hour day, leave work at 6:45am and depending on traffic,am home by 8am,so my house is naturally dark all night for the fids to get good sleep/rest until I return, As soon as I open the back door and Beebs hears me come in,he starts in with his little happy songs :D
And now winter at our door step, and the clocks being turned back an hour  Amy and BB should/would get plenty of rest.
Still, I get concerned over the little grey boy,not being there for him, just in case he has one of these episodes. :(

Yes, it's SUPER scary. Rascal literally almost died a couple years ago when he was being babysat at this woman's house (she owns 2 birds herself so she knows better!!) when I had to fly out of state for a week. This woman allowed him to thrash and thrash during a night fright episode for who knows how long. This prolonged thrashing caused severe inflammation and ALL his flight feathers fell out (I have the still have the gory pictures). She didn't even bother to notify me he was seriously injured... there was blood everywhere! He shouldn't be alive today.... he suffered massive infection since she didn't bother to rush him to the vet and just left him to suffer in her house for entire week until I came home then I RUSHED him to emergency clinic. He had suffered rhabdomyolysis which lead to kidney failure etc... he had to be tude fed for over 2 weeks and could barely stand anymore.

I honestly NEVER turn the lights off... 'Nut can still sleep just fine and only about half the cage is covered and he then knows it's sleepy time. After the horrible experiences I've had with tiels and night frights (not to mention repeated emergency clinic visits and SEVERAL THOUSANDS of dollars of vet bills)...
I feel MUCH better just leaving the living room light on as night frights can kill no doubt about that :( If you go on youtube you can see tiels who have been left seriously disabled after a night fright episode.

"Nut is TERRIFIED of being in the dark.. he sleeps soooo much better with my living room light on and I only cover half the cage (night lights aren't bright enough at least from what I have experienced)... I also have radio on super low volume playing music for him :) They have internal clocks... they know when it's night and when it's morning time to rise and shine... leaving the lights on doesn't seem to "trick" them that much. 'Nut still knows it's dark outside and he puts himself to bed every night :D

Rascal's night frights are so bad and chronic he sleeps in a fish tank next to me all night. That solved the problem for him. 'Nut has never had a night fright episode... not yet at least...

Very nice cage and cute cover, Juliet.

Thanks, I got the cover at Walmart :D It's a shower curtain works great... 'Nut hasn't complained yet. Looking at tropical things makes me happy :)

I guess I'll never use tinypic.com their image service is not the best I've noticed! :(

I just re-uploaded it using something else so hopefully the below images stay put :D

EDIT: I might shorten the fabric just a little bit more... what do you guys think? As I kind of wish it laid more flat/flush against the cage so that it looks more "tailored"... the fabric is still a little too long and overlaps onto the seed guard...

I've been making a lot of pina coladas lately thanks to this cage cover LOL... pina coladas... yummy :D

Oh, I LOVE that!

Yeah, I once did an extended babysitting for a cockatiel wayyyyy back in the day. Nothing was more terrifying than the sound of little wings beating against bars. I tried nightlights, no nightlights, covers, no covers, even music...

Then when I got the Rbird, HE did it, too. Again, tried everything I could think of. Awful.

Then, just before we moved up North (he was about 15) he just stopped. No idea why. Maybe just got to a certain age? I wish I could help.

What solved it completely for me was to have Rascal sleep in a fish tank right next to me all night long. He LOVES being able to see me all night if he wants to and I also custom built him a bed from wood I bought at Home Depot (spoiled little turd he is!!!). He hasn't had a single night fright episode in over 2 yrs ever since I had him start sleeping in the fish tank it is soooo awesome :D Before this he used to have them constantly and, like you, I tried EVERYTHING to no avail... it was very stressful! :(

If I started to allow him to sleep in the bird cage in the living room again he would kill himself. He'd be having constant night frights again.... so he sleeps in a fish tank for rest of his life. THANK GOODNESS 'Nut has never had an episode yet.... he is terrified of the dark so I leave one living room light on for him and I think he's happy with it :)

Here's a pic of Rascal's bed. I bought a bird but ended up with a feathered fish??? I tried making him sleep in a super tiny cage... not a 17 inch cage as that is way too big and is the cage size he almost died in... but he insists on sleeping in the fish tank. He HATED it for the first week but then loved it. I'm going to try having him sleep in tiny cage again next to me all night as I would prefer a tiny cage than having to constantly move this big ol' tank around!

Ya that helps for sure :D I don't blame him though... I'm a CHICKEN. I'm very scared of the dark too. I can never have the room completely dark ((I have 3 night lights in my room). I will just keep imagining the boogeyman's arm that will reach out from under my head and strangle me to death or something like that... you will never see me letting one of my legs hang out from under the covers... don't want something to grab it! Lots of bad things can happen in the dark... just ask Rascal LOL
