Certified Avian Caretaker Program

Hi Everyone,

I've just returned from Afghanistan and am glad to be home! Bella flew from her aviary when she saw me and has not left my side all week. I've seen alot of questions regarding our fine feathered friends and wanted everyone to know about a course I just completed. Google (Pet Industry Joint Advisory Council) and look for the certified avian caretaker program which can be taken at home. It has a ton of useful information about parrots in general as well as your specific bird. You will learn about their anatomy, animal husbandry, avian care, nutrition, habits, training, signs to know regarding health etc. You can join the council for $50.00 and the course is $75.00 but is worth its weight in gold! Would love comments from anyone else who has taken this course. Also, google Dr. Susan Clubb as she has written an enormous amount of information on all species of birds.

Were you allowed to print out the information? With your certificate in hand will you apply at an avian vets office?? I have learned much about what you listed on my own by reading books, joining clubs and chatting with vets. Of course I have no certificate for the learning process. Good luck and do good for educating all those people that get birds and know nothing about them.

Unfortunately they only offer an at home study course and once you take the open book exam you have to mail it back to them and then they grade it and send the certification. I was interested for my own knowledge as I take Bella into schools and conduct programs for educating kids.

We hear so much about people having trouble adapting to life at home after serving abroad, it is good to know you are doing a great job. Usually we only get the bad news.

It is quite an adjustment but having time off and goofing off with my pets definitely helps. It is great to be back on U.S. soil for sure!

The course seems pretty neat. I've done a mental flag of it - Christmas is coming and I know a gift my husband could get me that won't require braving the shopping mall!
