Pyros-Sun Conure
My four month old sun conure just came home three days ago. He's adjusting well and is a delight to the family. Next week, my dad is going to get the carpets cleaned by this agency

They assure it's safe for cats and dogs, but what about birds? Should I just move my conure to a different room or should I get him out of the house for a day? Much appreciated.

If you can get him out of the house for the day until they are completely dry, that's what I would do. Their respiratory system is so much more delicate than a dog or cats.

I would have to agree with Rio Mom!

No sense taking a chance if you have the ability to remove the FID's from the area.

I agree with the above members, rather move the bird out for the day, or until the carpets are dry, rather be safe than sorry.

Many common disinfectants and household cleaning agents release fumes that can be toxic or fatal to birds. Chlorine bleach, phenols and ammonia can all have dangerous vapors that can cause irritation, toxicosis and even death in pet birds. Common household aerosol products, such as perfume, deodorant and hairspray, can cause respiratory problems in birds as well. This may cause severe inflammation and difficulty breathing, and after large or direct exposure, death can occur. Cleaning products such as carpet cleaners or fresheners, upholstery cleaners or fresheners, or any similar cleaning product can be quite deadly to your bird.

All depends on what chemicals they're using...like it was mentioned above, why take the risk when you don't have to. Most commercial detergents are pretty strong. But I know that the one we use to clean ourselves was pretty safe. Resolve for pet stains I think? Only have one last room with carpets as we rid the carpets from room to room....

Yeah - if you can move your bird COMPLETELY away (ie, to another place) I would go with that.

While some places claim to be cat, dog safe; or won't cause allergic reactions; I myself got rather sick when I had the carpet cleans out at a dorm I was staying in at college. The cleaners kept protesting saying that their solution was completely safe, etc - and refused to accept my complaint of headaches and the skin peeling off the bottom of my feet! Grr!! Can't trust many of these companies these days.

(Note: I am more sensitive to smells/chemicals than other people; gas stoves if left on too long make me dizzy, deodorant sprays make me start coughing, etc, and I'm allergic to several different cleaning products and the like. So I'm very picky about what I use for cleaning and around ME let alone my birds.)

My birds were stuck at home in the next room when I cleaned my carpets and they did just fine. I'd still have rathered move them for the day, but I couldn't put the cages outside because of the winter weather.

I had this same dilemma a few months ago and a member here (WannaBeAParrot) recommended that I use a water only carpet cleaner. She has a 30 year old conure who was never harmed by this method of cleaning.

I used a company called Zerorez. They used a truck powered steam cleaner that used only water. It didn't smell like anything. It took them 1 hour to set up, 1 hour to clean. I was just left with a damp (but spotless) carpet, no fragrance, just a clean smell. I took Boomer outside because I didn't want him to get scared of the noise but I really think it would not have harmed him either way.

hello
Carpet Absorbent Cleaners

This method is often called "dry cleaning" since virtually no water is used.

In this method, dry absorbent compound (containing small amounts of water, detergent, and solvent,) is sprinkled over carpet or worked into the carpet with a machine. This purpose of this cleaner is to attract and absorb soil. Mechanical agitation from a brush works the cleaner through the carpet.

These products usually contain an absorbent carrier, water, detergent and solvent. The theory is that the liquids dissolve the soil and this soil/detergent/solvent mixture is absorbed into the carrier and is then vacuumed up. They are often used with a detergent prepay in heavily soiled areas.

I am unaware about that but it rely on quantity of using chemicals. And after utilize the products can be somehow about that.
