We were hoping to get our carpets cleaned sometime soon.We are calling Pearls vet tomorrow but wanted to check if anybody here had their carpet cleaned with their bird.We also wanted to have the scotch guard put in the carpet.Any input on this?

Thanks

Whoa!! Stop right there!!

Be VERY careful about Scotch Guard! There have been reports of parrots dying as soon as people brought home a couch or some other furniture that had been treated with Scotch Guard.

As for carpet cleaning, be a pain in the backside and insist they ONLY use steam, or a little white vinegar. Insist on having it written down that they are not using any other chemicals or detergents.

To be extra safe, I'd take the birds somewhere else for at least a couple of nights.

So carpet shampooing is okay?We were going to remove her while it's done.

I have used my steam cleaner, most of the time with just hot water, but if I use "shampoo" the bird spends the day outside~

I have a RugDoctor, the same thing you can rent from Home Depot (if you're in the US anyway) that I use around here. I use the RD shampoo. Kazi is in his room, door shut, air scrubber going full bore. The RD shampoo has virtually no smell, but I am still taking no chances. I also only do one room at a time but that's less to do with Kazi and more to do with my generalized laziness ;)

I have heard Scotch Guard is just as deadly as overheated Teflon for birds, so I wouldn't risk it.

I have a Kirby vacuum that can also do shampooing. I don't actually have any carpet, but I take my rugs upstairs to do just as a precaution. I haven't had any problems doing that. I would like to do the couches but if I do I will take the birds to a neighbors for at least a day. And I'll wait for a warm and windy day so I can open all the windows. I'm thinking of switching to like bamboo rugs instead of carpeted ones. The ones in my front room are off white and it seems every time someone comes in here with muddy boots, they walk all over the rugs instead of the wood floor, grr!

Okay we are probably going to have Stanley steamers do it.Most likely justa regular clean and I'll be sure NO SCOTCHGUARD.Thanks for the warnings!

Im so glad I read this. I had no idea about the scotch guard! I clean my own rugs with water and a lil vinegar but I was just looking at furniture the other day and read the sign that said "ASK ABOUT SCOTCH GUARD" I bought a leather futon for our camp, but tis is valuable info for when I buy furniture in the future! Thanks again!
