It has always been a dream of mine to own a macaw since I was very little. It’s just that Macaws (bluie & gold) are roughly $7000 where I live, and I am currently working a 9-5 job, mon-fri. I’m 20 and plan on going to Uni next year to study teaching, while working part time. Thing is, my dream to own a macaw is something I’m so serious about I’ve considered changing my career plans and studying floristry and opening a florist where I could have my macaw at the store all day with me. I’ve always wanted to do floristry as well, so it’s not a huge change from what I wanted, but that’s how much I want a macaw… I would change my career to have one. LOL.

I’m just wondering tho, if floristry didn’t work out/I didn’t like it or I stuck with teaching instead, do you think it’s possible to keep a (happy) macaw while working roughly 6-8 hours a day? Of course he would have a MASSIVE cage and lots and LOTS of toys/puzzle toys to keep him busy… and he would be out every morning and every night like my current bird.

And obviously I don’t plan to buy a macaw right now, I don’t have the money right now for starters and I need to sort out the other parts of my life like study and career first. But I am wondering if my dream of owning one is actually something I can achieve.

Does anyone else have happy macaws who also work?

I work A LOT!!!!! But I provide plenty of toys for him to chew up. We leave tv on for him to watch. Sometimes my partner is home and sometimes we're both gone for 12hrs working. Especially me, working 12hr shifts often, I just did that for 13 straight days couple of weeks ago. All their food, house payment, blah blah all comes from somewhere so I've gotta work for pay for all that. My B&G is used to my schedule so yes you can have a Macaw while working. But I really don't get much sleep since I stay up pretty late playing with the babies and stuff....So I play catch up when I can get time off....

Aw that's great!!! That makes me feel much better knowing I can work and still have my dream macaw! :) I was so sad thinking I'd never be able to have one!

I also have a B&G and am out of the house for around 10hrs a day Monday-Friday. I leave the radio on for my B&G and he has lots of toys and cardboard to shred up if he wants. He is very happy, they get used to it. Just make sure it gets attention when you are there and it will be fine

lol we all have to work for our birds!! as long as its not to erractic with the hours and you keep them entertained while your gone, why not

I am a full time nursing student, so I am gone for long hours sometimes for clinicals. I agree with everybody else, I have lots of toys and I leave the tv on! You can do it! Just make sure you make time for your sweet baby when you get home! :)

Thanks for all your replies, makes me so happy knowing I can actually own a macaw one day now lol. I always thought I’d never be able to because all the websites I read were going on about how “omg you need to spend 24 hours a day with your parrot or it will pluck its feathers out” type thing… lol.

That's Great that you're able to work and have a macaw im in the same position at the moment deciding to have a macaw and work but i wanted to ask if you live in a flat ? and in regards to the screaming lol do your neighbors complain?

Kind regards

My macaw will start to pluck again if I am away longer than 6 hours...
so it is up to the individual bird.

As a florist you will hardly earn enough to keep a macaw and you will still be away a lot of the time (flowers dont walk themselves to your store if you understand what I am saying)

There is a difference in "can they bear it/ put up with it/ learn to tolerate" and "are they really happy".
If you have a bird not with you for a huge amount of their 12 waking hours, consider having multiple birds.

Times are changing, like the solo-rabbit is becomming obsolete fast now we are finally aknowledging that they are also group animals and need at least one other rabbit around ... its time to honour the parrot-flock instead of the solo-bird.

We now know so much more about natural behaviour now, and *know* how intelligent they are and how dependend on stimulation all day long... it is not fair to ignore it and keep telling ourselves "he is fiiine all by his lonely self".
