My galah cockatoo seemed to choke tonight on a red kidney bean gave me and my hubby a right fright she was shaking her head back and forth and looked like she was in severe distress, after a while she seemed ok again but i wasn't aware parrots could actually choke....

I would imagine it possible depending on the size of food and location. My Grey will occasionally wolf down food so intently he pauses, arches his neck, and finally swallows. If he is normal now, all is likely well. Is he used to eating kidney beans, and if so was it swallowed whole? My birds generally bit it in two and leave the cellulose skin behind.

If this was a one-time or very rare event, all is probably well. Just be sure to monitor her while eating, and consider a vet visit if this behavior continues.

anything that ingests food through the mouth can choke, simply through swallowing food larger than their digestive tract. Often it either gets brought up or will get dislodged and brought down.

If you're galah is fine then there's nothing to worry about. Maybe cut up the kidney beans from now on just to be safe
