Can a Cage be TOO Big?

Cinnamon Green Cheek Conure named Georgia
Hi everyone! So recently I've been wanting to get my Conure, Georgia, a new cage. My schedule has been all over the place lately and some days she has to spend more in-cage time than either of us would like, so I have thought about buying her a larger cage to give her more room to play as well as more room to add extra toys and perches. Her current cage is a good size and does allow room for toys, but Georgia is a very active bird and loves nothing more than to explore and play with literally anything she can find! Including laptop keyboards, picture frames, cameras, posters, fabric of any kind, and anything else! She is definitely a handful, but she is one of the sweetest birds I have ever owned. I've always known what cage is too small, but I've never thought about whether a cage can be too big! The cage I found her has measurements of: 42"W x 30"D x 64"H as well as a perfect 5/8" bar space. Before I make the leap into trying to purchase this cage though I wanted to check with some other bird owners on whether they think a cage can be too big! Thank you for any information! (I attached a picture of Georgia so you could get an idea of her size! Isn't she a cutie?)

As long as the bar spacing is the right size, go for it! Sounds like you are an excellent parront! And yes, she is a cutie. Look at her posing for her picture!:)

Really, only if you have one of those "phobic" birds.

We had a plucking Goffins that wanted nothing to do with a big cage full of scary toys...

My little bitty greencheek conure cage, that I've been in all my life please. And just two perches and a preening toy if you don't mind. Anything more than that, and this bird would end up with festering sores...

She was that neurotic!

But that is the exception, rather than the rule, and she was plucked down to the last head feather, neurotic as hell, and covered in sores when she was dropped off down at the rescue. No one ever knew why...

We didn't have a history on her, other than I was the first person she had ever gone to voluntarily, and my daughter was the second... (I put the ointment on her festering sores. Sarah became "her person" after I started putting the medicine on.)

She is adorable! I don't think any cage with the right bar spacing can be TOO big. My conure has the whole dining and living room to fly around (he is cage free) and that's still not TOO big! LOL

Depends on the bird, but 99% of the time, no a cage can't be too big. You do get the occasional stubborn older bird who's always been in a smaller cage and is not interested in an upgrade (read: petrified half to death of that scary new thing where my old home used to be), but that's kind of rare. I would bet good money Georgia would love a bigger cage, especially if she's active! We recently upgraded our amazons cage to a much larger one in an entirely different color than his old one. He didn't even bat an eye about moving right on in, if anything, he was super excited for the extra room and a long-time wish of his (knowing my bird) of a big swing;)

Please share some photos of her in her new home when you get it:) I'm sure your pretty spoiled baby would love to show off her new house and:D

Thank you all so much for your help! I'm definitely going to be buying my baby a new cage(and a ton of new toys to go with it of course!). I will most definitely post pictures once she is in her new home!

Awww I'm jealous, I wish I could do that. I have two cats a friend pawned off on me when she moved so I can't let 'em out all the time. I did put a cat door with a sliding panel on it between the main living space and the upstairs door so I can shut them out of the main rooms for awhile while I let my birds fly around for a few hours a day. I wish they could be free all the time. Your birds are very lucky :)

Hi Sidney,
I've been looking for a 30 by 40 inch cage, or close to that size, with 5/8 inch bar spacing. can you let me know where you found it or maybe post/PM me a link if possible? Most cages that big have 3/4 or 1 inch spacing. Too big for my white wing parakeets. BTW I don't think a cage can ever be too big provided the bird is comfortable in it and the cage can be kept clean! thanks!

As long as the bird have no actual issues no cage can ever be too big.

Go for it! My GCC is in a amazon cage, was made for breeding conures, but the bar spacing is just right so she cant get through, as long as bar spacing isn't to big, do it! :) Some people say that birds kill themselves if their in too big of cage but that makes no sense! Also, he has never owned a bird and I bet if he did, it would be an Indian ring neck in a budgie cage! -.- So if anyone says that, they just cray cray!

I second Mikey. A cage is never too big. Gives them more room to fly around and stretch their wings!

Bar space and a cage with good reviews makes finding a big cage for a Green Cheek terribly hard! Hopefully I'll find one that meets mine and Georgia's standards lol

Im new to birds but i dont think a cage can be too big. I have a green cheek conure :rainbow1: also and right now he is in an HQ flight cage but i do plan to save up for this cage below. It may not be the BEST cage but its big enough for one conure and I LOVE THIS CAGE. Plus it is bigger than the HQ and my bird will of course have time to fly around the house every day as well.
