I know this subject has been pretty well hashed out, but I wanted to put up an answer from the manufacturers of my pots and pans.

About 4 years ago I made the switch away from non-stick pots and pans. I'm a terrible cook and can't even use the excuse, "but i never burn things so I don't have to worry about this."

I use hard anodized aluminum. Since anodization is an electro-chemical process, I was farely confident that I was ok and no harm would come to my babies.

I was shopping for a PTFE free muffin pan on Thursday and found out that a lot of companies add an additional layer of PTFE over the anodization and don't mark it very well.

I'm sure you all can imagine the state of panic that I went into. I spent the rest of the day trying to figure if my particular line of pots and pans were contaminated. Also anytime I heard a bird sneeze, I imagined that I had done permanent harm, but that's a bit of my own neurosis. :09:

I own the Calphalon contemporary pots and pans, btw.

Dear Joel,

Thank you for contacting Calphalon regarding the effects of non-stick cookware on birds. We appreciate your interest in our products. The Hard Anodized cookware does not have any of the polymers as the non stick however just burning foods can harm the bird.

Bird owners should note that fumes, smoke and odors - from food, cookware, paint, insecticides and even household cleaning products - can quickly harm or even kill some birds. To keep pet birds safe, ensure that they are kept away from potentially harmful situations or materials.

Please feel free to contact us if you have any additional questions or concerns. You may also call us directly at 1-800-809-PANS (7267). Our hours of operation are Monday through Friday from 8:00am - 5:00pm EST. Please note that when you call any of our representatives are able to directly answer your question.

Sincerely,

Darla

This question was specific to my line of pots and pans. For anyone who uses anodized aluminum, make sure you ask the manufacturer about PTFE.
