2 Black Headed Caiques - Bunsen & Beaker
I was wondering if any of you guys had travel tips. We got one of those nifty Celltei backpacks. So far, our two Caiques love it. My wife teaches and is off for the summer, so they run around with her all day. They get excited and surf all over the perch. Then they promptly fall off... I'm sensing a common theme with these guys.

The farthest they've gone is a one hour car drive. We'd like to get them up to 3 1/2. Any lessons learned on the pitfalls we might run into? My wife has already learned that if you go into Walmart with birds on your back, you get a lot of questions.

wow...I wish those backbacks weren't so expensive...It's exactly what i need for my Pippin!

Merlin's been on a 3 1/2 hour train ride. Just build up the time :) Some birds are completely fine with travel, some get 'travel sick'. But your guys seem to be fine. Either provide them with 'rest breaks' if they don't have water/food in the carrier, or just make sure they've got enough for their journey. :)

I brought my Pippin as a baby back from the mainland..about a 45 minute drive to the Ferry, then a 2 hours ferry ride then 2 more hours of driving to get home...He did fine :) I have always taken my birds on car rides and never did anything to "prepare" them...never had any trouble at all.

That's great to hear! They're young, i hope getting them travelling and interacting with people will further socialize them. We give them food and water, until they spill food all over the base of their cage.

We've got an hour drive this weekend. We'll see how they do.

We never really prepared Merlin either. We were taking him to specialist vets from being 12 week old and that travel ranged from an hour on the bus, to 3 hours+ bus/tram etc. Then as he got older he's come to places with us, visiting my aunt on the other side of the country etc. Some just take to it, some don't, those who don't I'd suggest make it small and build it up.

Merlin LOVES to travel, it's his favourite thing without a doubt. Seeing new sights, hearing new sounds, the radio in the car, meeting new people. Loves loves loves it! :)

I looked at the backpacks when the search for a travel cage began. As it turned out I just used a regular small bird cage and changed the perch to fit my Amazon's feet. She did perfectly in that. However, I love the thought of being able to take her pretty much everywhere with ease. Enjoy :)

My baby caique is just about 16 weeks old and he seems to really enjoy car rides. :) Im planning on moving next year, so I want him to get used to it. I'm sure as long as they don't seem stressed out then they should be fine! Good luck and let us know

Hey! I know you're looking for a travel cage for Pippin. I honestly still groan everytime I think about the price on the backpack. The biggest driver was convenience. My wife needed something lightweight that she could move while carrying all of her class stuff.

I know RiosMom mentioned a cat carrier in another post. From my research (pipe up if anyone knows differently), if your bird likes to see where they're going in the car, the collapsible cages work great. You'll have to watch the bar spacing, but it's pretty easy to mount perches, water, & food. If your bird gets nervous, the cat carrier is nice safe place with just enough air circulation. I know people who have used both and they work great.

The last thing we looked at was a cheapo "parakeet" cage. If i remember correctly, I was worried about how sturdy they were. The door to get the bird out was also way too small. I still think that if you found the right one, it could work. Possibly for around $30?

Hope this is helpful.

I have the celltie pack o bird backpack for Neytiri. I love it. Yeah it's expensive but it's also made in the us!

I just ordered one for Diamond, embroidered with his name. :) I guess I'm committed to that name, now!

Wow, I got personal email from them half an hour later. Shipping tomorrow! Nice company.

They are way more expensive up here than in the US, still, and only a limited number of stores carry them... I am thinking I might cross the border and get one down there...

Walmart allows animals inside?
