Caique baby noises

As you may have read, I recently added Bandit to our family. He’s a black headed caique that we are hand feeding. I have plenty of experience handfeeding, and I will say this bird does some different things then what I am used to. Most babies I have hand fed usually are loud before feeding and then quiet down after feeding. Not this little guy. When he wakes up he will preen and walk around his tub and be mostly quiet. Once he is fed, though, it’s a different story. After he is fed he makes this calling sound. It’s not aggravating or anything. But makes me wonder if I am doing something “wrong” in the caique world. The baby is completely healthy, though, and weight is completely stable as well.

For those of you who have hand fed, can you share with me some of your experiences ? Thanks!

I spoke to the breeder who we got him from. She said this is a common thing with caique babies.

Happy to hear that this is common among caiques and not a problematic symptom for your baby.

If the baby was previously fed by the parents I would consider it normal behavior. They simply do not know yet that you are their new food source so to speak. New environment and new feeding method left ours silent the first week. What helped is holding the beak with thumb and index finger on the sides , which was the only method to trigger the typical head bobbing movement during feeding. Once we triggered normal feeding behavior, it started screaming as soon as we entered the room or when it was hungry.

Ours is now 9 weeks and we are trying to get him on fruits and vegetables.
