cage size for baby eclectus

I am getting a baby eclectus (4 months old) in January. I have bought a large pay top macaw cage for him as I want to give him the most room possible. Can he be put in this cage when a baby with the perches lowered and food dishes close to the bottom until he is able to navigate the cage from higher up?Thanks

I'm curious about this too! Everything I've read suggests a big, macaw-sized cage for an eclectus so they have as much room as possible and plenty of room to climb, but I do wonder if that'll overwhelm a baby. Nothing I've heard has indicated that, but I wouldn't be able to say from experience yet. :/

At 4 months the "clumsiest" stage should be over, and your new baby should be all right in the cage. To be on the safe side, add some lower perches, a boing perhaps, as they are easy to grip and hold onto.

If he is perching fine and fully weaned then he probably will not need lower perches.

The Large Cage will be absolutely fine for him

He will love the large cage! As others have said, at 4 months he shouldn't be too clumsy. But if when you bring him home, you find that he IS a bit clumsy, you can always lower the perches until he's better on his feet.

On a similar topic, is it better for my eclectus to get a dome-top cage that's got more inside height or a flat-top cage that's easier to climb on the ceiling of but shorter inside? Everywhere I look someone argues about how the eclectus needs the bigger cage or someone's arguing that they'd rather have the flat top to climb.

I have my ekkie girl in a macaw sized dome top cage. I'm at work & can't remember the exact dimensions right now. It is the largest the company makes before going to the double macaw cage. I have a portable play perch I put in front of Leyla Belle's door for her to hang out on. Occasionally she will climb to the top of her cage. She has been in this cage since she was 5 months old.

I originally bought it for my 1 macaw, then before he was old enough to come home, I added his older brother. I then set up an aviary in my living room for the two boys.

I have a thread in this forum called: The Diva of my flock, and I have a picture of Leyla Belle on her perch in front of her cage. You can't see all of the cage, but you can get an idea of how large it is. Good luck with your new baby. Eclectus are awesome birds.

When i brought pickle home for the first time (fully weaned, but recently clipped by the breeder, i didn't want them to but they clip all their birds) he was a little off balance from the clip initially i think, and he slept in the smaller carrier cage for two nights because we were also worried about this, but then after a couple of days playing in the cage and getting to know his environment he was coordinated enough that i wasn't scared he would fall and he got to stay in his cage

No matter what cage you get i think, it is just the way birds are that they will pick the highest vantage point to sit on, I have a dome top where the roof opens up for a higher perch, and the bottom half of the cage ends up being mostly unused by pickle - but also it can be hard to get him down off of the perch or roof because its so high. I personally wish i had gotten a lower flat topped cage with a playtop, in hindsight.
