Cage building material?

Has anyone on here every built their own cage? We have their big ones for in the house but we want to get something for travel and also if there was an emergency that we had to get them out of the house. We have looked at dog/cat crates and weren't real pleased with those. We have 3 fids who have to housed separately. We also want to be able to put perches and food/water in there.In case we have to be out for a sevral hours or a number of days. Are there any safe building materials? I know all the wood types, avoid zinc, etc. But what about a type of screen, fencing, aluminum, etc. Thanks in advance!!

I've never built one, but I know there are hundreds of people out there...

For travel though, have you ever considered using either small cages with large doors or travel cages made specifically for parrots?

There are also a couple of collapsible cages that your small birds could fit into.
