Buddy - Red Crowned Amazon (27 yo)
Venus - Solomon Island Eclectus (4 yo)
Buzz CAG (2 yo)
Sam - Cockatiel 1997 - 2004
Tweety - Budgie 1984 - 1987

I brought Buzz home in April 2016 and since he's been here, he has been a hard nut to crack. No touching allowed, he will happily take food from me, whistles, chats, he's our morning alarm because he's up as soon as the sun is up. Last week I was gone helping family out with an emergency and upon returning he was very standoffish. Venus was on my shoulder in a heartbeat lol.

So I moved Buzz's cage right next to my chair in the livingroom. This puts him no more than 3.5 feet away from me. For him to eat he has to come by me and it is working. Basically my thought with this is he close to me so he has to do things like eat, drink, forage and play close to me so he should get use to doing these things in close proximity to a human and help him relax.

So far so good. He loves the whistle game where we whistle back and forth, most of the time he's repeating me and loves to try repeating new patterns. He also loves new toys. My point, he's progressing very, very, very slowly but it's progress. For any new parront, patience is so important and it pays off.

Greys IMO are very difficult nuts to crack! Ironically they are among the most intelligent but also independent of parrots. Keep at it, your patience will produce results.

Buzz! Keep at it! I'm so happy for him that you found him - he's going to be an amazing companion in time.

27 years with Smokey, and as hard as I tried, I couldn't crack her!

Yup. Some are just tougher nuts to crack than others. But I truly believe that you'll win him over, Trace.

I give you credit, if Perjo was not willing to me let he handle her like I do I'm not sure I would be willing to deal with it long term. I'm very lucky that she does. Keep up your work, it will that much more rewarding when Buzz opens up.

We've had Corky for over a year now. He still wants nothing to with me other than bite me. He will take treats from me. But he talks in context, plays and eats well so that's good enough for me. Our relationship is just going to be verbal.

Greys are very peculiar. They want acceptance on their own terms - but from what it sounds like with Buzz, I think he will come around.

Your relationship with Corky sounds like what I will have with Buzz though luckily he doesn't bite, yet. Thanks for telling me about Corky. Venus my Ekkie is all over me and my best mannered bird. I can do pretty much what I want with her. Buddy my Amazon, he isn't as well mannered but he comes to me, goes our with me, lots of interaction. So while I'm interacting with them I feel a bit of guilt for Buzz, however like Corky he plays, eats, and we are always whistling and chatting so I know he's happy.

You may (or maybe not) have seen my mush mac, Zoe. She's a pile of feathers with me.

Corky was 15 when we got him and had been kept in a dog crate for the last 7 years and kept in a back room without any interaction. His cage is macaw sized and he gets out regularly. I just have to remember to guard my toes [emoji23]

LOL...sounds exactly what I dealt with,with Smokes,Trace.
I also felt guilty with Amy. She goes/went EVERYWHERE with me. interacted/socialized with other people/birds.
And Smokey wanted NO PART of any of it  She didn't even like to be handled either.
BUT she was loving in her special way. She did enjoy my shoulder,or my buddy Joes. She would talk in my ear, nibble my lobe, bang her beaky on my forehead. She talked very well, took nummies from my hand, ate from my plate...did anything any other parrot did...just was not lovey. Couldn't take her places coz she hated hands. She would whistle, woo, and talk while in her carrier going to her docs, but I couldn't let her sit on the head rest like Amy.
But she was loving,in her unique/grey way,and my heart still aches for her 1.5 years later.

Oh I know Zoe, your nerd bird, lol! She loves mechanics and likes to dismantle them. I love sharing stories of her, she's so smart and a mush Mac.
