this was Buttercup. the video was taken in the morning and seemed to be doing better than the night before....well... we all know how this turned out :(

in the middle of the video you can see she start shaking her violently and then rubbing her beak on the perch, the reason she was doing this was because the mites were moving inside her trachea and eventually killed her.

R.I.P. Buttercup, you sure were pretty

this is Sugar-also with air sac mites and possible upper respiratory infection(sometimes they have the exact same symptoms)
she sounds much more crackly but has NO voice what so ever.
about 3/4's of the way thru the video she crackles a bit....every time I turned the camera on she would stop, when I turned it off she would start, so it was not the best video, but you can hear her.

Oh man, Beth, those videos put tears in my eyes, especially seeing Buttercup. :(

Yes, the audio is QUITE good, and you can also see them gasping for air???? Poor bubs!!

Do you think Sugar will make a full recovery?

That is so sad. What's the story? What kind of bird are they and how did they get mites?

I'm not seeing it, it's not showing up :(

that remains to be seen, she's not puffy like Buttercup was, and not wheezing, but is crackling something awful....almost sounds like a cold.
I could have sworn I saw mucus come out of her today when she shook her head.
I've put her on a new med. that I have here that treats upper and digestive tract infections, so it covers both, gram negative and positive infections.

the other medication I was using didn't have any affect on her since I've had her. so by now she should have improved, so I switched....

I hope people don't think I'm playing god here, I am no vet. However I've had enough experience to know how to treat these terrible mites, which can cause an secondary infection.

I'm really keeping my fingers crossed that Sugar will recover, I'll know in the next day or two if she improves.
I just hate the suffering!!

I've only had them since Friday and it's amazing how attached you become to them in such a short period of time.

on and off today I thought a lot of Buttercup wishing things had turned out differently....my eyes still fill with tears when I think of her.

How can you get rid of the mites? Is there a way?

It tore me apart watching the videos
I know how heartbroken you are
Praying the mites can be omitted somehow
Hugs for you

Oh how terrible!! I have never heard of this before....how scary :( Poor babies....I really hope that Sugar baby can make a full recovery. Now I need to find you a few gallons of that ivermec to send up there :|

I'm hoping with your experience you can answer a couple of questions. I am wanting to buy a canary but afraid to bring it in with my birds who are healthy and have all been vet checked and seem like all is well. Rose Breasted Cockatoo, Black Palm and a Queen of Bavaria.
What can I do to make sure there are no mites or air sak mites that you spoke about after adopting 3 canaries. Anything else I should be worried about besides mites or air sac mites?
If I buy a Canary SHOULD I TAKE THE CANARY DIRECTLY TO THE AVIAN VET? SHOULD I QUARANTINE FOR TWO MONTHS? Air Sac Mites that stay dorment are they contagious? I just don't know anything about canaries? My friend bought one at a show for 60.00 and it sings so beautiful and I just love to listen to it over the phone as we talk. She has several birds and didn't take any precaution, 6 months after one of her finches was found dead at the bottom of cage? She was trying to breed and all seemed find but the male was dead at the bottom of the cage for no apparent reason. Now the Timbrado is in a separate cage in the same room and is healthy so all is fine with him.
My house is so open and other than closing the Canary off in room upstairs for two months, which just seems ridiculous and cruel. How much space is needed between my birds and the new one?
The breeder in Florida of the Timbrado Canary is very much involved in shows for Song. I have been to her house and she seems to be a good experienced breeder. I did ask about mites and she said she does treat them every few months just to insure they don't have them. I am confused. ARE CANARIES SUBJECT TO MITES? Just want to be careful. Can a Avian Vet Do a wellness check for whatever? CAN HE TELL IF THE BIRD HAS THE THINGS I AM ASKING YOU ABOUT BY DOING AN EXAM? Do you suggest a checkup with an Avian Vet before bringing it home? Can you give me some advise. I swore I wouldn't have anymore birds but just really love the sound that comes from the Timbrado Canary! I hear just so many nightmares about bringing in sick bird and exposing my healthy birds just want to do my homework. Just the thought of mites freak me out. Never seen mites on a bird before but hear small birds like finches and canaries have them. Sorry so many questions but just in the dark when it comes to these little delicate beautiful birds!
Thanks for any advise you can give me. I tried to PM you but haven't posted enough. After reading this it makes me very reluctant to purchase a canary or any new bird. I read something else you posted on mites and how hard to get rid of. It makes me itch just thinking about it. Put my mind at ease. I also have several small dogs that I guess could be at risk.
