Bumble - Pacific (or Celestial) Parrotlet hatched 02/19/17
I went out of town for the weekend - my stepdad turned 75 - and left Bumble at home. My BFF (who owns 5 birds currently) had agreed to come over twice a day - morning to uncover the cage and give her breakfast, and evening to let her out to play, give her dinner, and put her to bed. I left Thursday night and returned yesterday.

On Friday morning, I got a call from BFF and of course I panicked when I saw her name on my phone. I panicked even more when she sounded a little hesitant to tell me what was up. When she realized I was in panic-mode she said, "Oh first - Bumble is FINE." Then the "but" came . . . she and her daughter had heard something beeping in the apartment and when they finally located it, they discovered it was the water sensor by my hot water tank. Leak! And carpet that literally squished it was so wet.

These are the moments that I'm thankful I rent and live in an apartment in 2019. I opened up my complex app and sent in a maintenance request.

Meanwhile, my sister pointed out that plumbers might use any number of toxic smelly things, so I called BFF back and asked if she could take Bumble home. The reason I didn't have her over there already is that in addition to her five birds, she has 2 cats, 2 dogs, and any number of "critters" living there. I thought the chaos would be stressful, and also it's much harder for her to get any out of cage time there. Of course, BFF said certainly and packed her into her "overnight cage" and took her home.

Well. Apparently Bumble had great fun! She immediately started chatting with the cockatiel, flocked-called with the TAG (CAG?), and fit right in, eating at the same time as all the others, etc. BFF took her into the bathroom for a little bit each day to get her out and play.

She was super excited and happy to see me yesterday (BFF brought her to the airport), and the cockatiel now says "peekaboo" the same way Bumble does! Haha!

Oh, and I have a new hot water tank and the carpet in the closet is only a little damp and the apartment is only a little musty. I ran my fan and had all the windows open yesterday, and I'll coat the carpet with baking soda when I get home tonight. And my weekend was fantastic, although I missed my Bum something fierce.

That's wonderful to hear how well Bumble adapted to the sudden turn of events, getting along splendidly with the other birds :)

I LOVE that Bumble is teaching her peekaboo to others :p

Sorry to hear about the apartment though! We're suffering through a water problem as well, but I know in the PNW we sure do love our carpeted floors  Hope it dries out quickly in the summer heat and doesn't keep moisture/grow mold *fingers crossed

Stressful Inger, glad you had smart, experienced back up ! Something happens to our Bumble, they got a A LOT of P/O's people gonna ruin their life.

Isn't it amazing? You worry so much that your fid is going to freak out/react in a negative way and then find out it was all for nothing?? That he/she had a blast??!! So happy to hear lil Bummy had such a great time..maybe you and BFF can set up play dates like Al and I do for Salty and Amy??

also happy to read that your water problem wasn't as bad as it could have been...been there done that!

Glad you made it back home safely Inger! ;)

Oh my bestie knows exactly how much Bumble means to me, and she’d go to the ends of the earth to take care of her if I couldn’t.

You and Bumble are so fortunate to have caring and competent caretakers as needed. Sounds like she had a great time!

Hot water heater leaks are a mess. :(

Believe me, I'm fully aware of how lucky I am when it comes to my BFF! And she did seem to have a great time. If I go away again and it's only overnight, I might just take her over there instead of having my friend come here.

If it were up to the Missus, we'd hire a house-sitting team that included an electrician, plumber, radon expert, fire/safety expert, home invasion detective, bigfoot/zombie/velociraptor combatant.............................lol
Glad everything's okay there!

Plumbers and dangerous chemicals (nasty smells).

As North America works at incorporating new plumbing standards (codes) the dangerous chemicals are sliding away. The primary application of those chemicals is used with rigid plastic piping /connections. That product is nearing a point of zero use in new build and quickly being replaced in repair applications (plastic tubing with compression fittings).

Under the most current replacement code for Hot Water Heaters in North America. All existing plumbing connecting (the cold and hot water pipes) are cut and switched to the current tube and compression fittings. Zero use of chemicals.

*** Still something that the home owners needs to be aware of and asking questions remains very important.

Excellent information! I’m always surprised by the depth and breadth of your knowledge. Hopefully I won’t need to know anything about it again LOL but-as we all would with our fids-better to err in the side of caution. Removing Bumble meant not worrying about her. [emoji3526]
