My husband and I are planning to aquire a macaw in the future as our first large bird purchase (probably a hyachinth, blue and gold or green wing other more docile species reccomendations are appreciated) I am working on plans for the indoor and outdoor aviary currently. I have no size limit and my budget is rather unlimited as well. I want my birds enviornment to be the best and most enriching as possible so any reccomendations to make it as such are very welcomed. I want the aviaries to be as large as possible what size is best? Should I have a natural bottem on the outdoor aviary? If so should I bury perimeter panals or wire and if so how deep? What is the best material for the aviary panals? What things do I need to make sure to include beyond lots of natural wood for chewing, perches, and toys? What plants have worked out well for you? Do I need to have a smaller cage inside for sleeping or could I just build a comfortable area into the indoor aviary? For the indoor aviary I was thinking 12x6 at least. This set up will be for one macaw. Also would a water feature benificial or hazardous in the outdoor aviary? Okay that's all for now! Thank you for your time.

If possible, plan to build an aviary that's at least 12 feet long, 6 feet wide and 8 feet high.and if you are making an outdoor aviary or extensive indoor structure you may need permission from local authorities. The best type is zinc and lead-free (both substances are poisonous for these chewing birds). The wire mesh should be 10-gauge in strength. You will also need natural, untreated wood for the frame. Additionally, your macaw will need lots of natural branches for perches, and these will need to be replaced from time to time.Large aviaries can have concrete flooring covered with a smooth linoleum for easy cleaning.

You might want to contact Nyla. She can help you choose the kind of cage (permanent? temporary? moveable? frame? substrate? plants?) to build. I don't know what she charges, but she can design a cage for you and tell you exactly what materials to go pick up at a hardware store and you can either build it yourself or fly her in and she will build it for you!

I've only learned about her less than a week ago, and she has done a fantastic job with all the aviaries she's built! And she's even designed one for Blu Lu, owned by Barbara Heidenreich!!!

Hands down, she'll always recommend stainless steel wire mesh over any other kind of wire mesh!
