Good morning

I currently share my 1 bedroom apartment with a 6 year old Senegal which is very sweet and quite. A friend of mine has a pair of wild Bronze wings that he had rescued 2 years ago from an owner that just wanted to breed them. Unfortunately my friend has been transferred by his company to Europe and as he can't bring the birds with him has approached me about taking them in. My question is how loud can an untamed pair of Pionus parrots be and will they effect my Senegal's behavior in anyway. I live in an apartment with concrete walls and would most likely try to tame the parrots. Would I be in over my head?

first let me state that pionus in general are considered to be one of the quietest birds out there. also the bronze wings are very beautiful and very hard to find birds. i dont think youll have a problem with them. but on the other hand since you have a senegal. i have heard that they are very moddy and one person birds. your senegal might not like the idea of other pets in the house. its a gamble but might be well worth it if you pull it off.

I rescued a Bronze Wing last year. She was born in 1995. She is quite quiet, very occasionally squawks, but mostly whistles and says "hello or uh oh", can't tell which, or maybe both. She spends most of her time on my shoulder and she is a sweetheart. I don't plan on getting another bird, but I don't think she would allow it if I wanted to. Good luck.

Unfortunately the answer, like with combining all thinking beings, is "it depends."

I think it is sometimes difficult to get a bonded, unhandled pair of any kind of bird to be "tame" but it is still easy to enjoy them, if you accept that this relationship will be different - not better or worse, but different - from your relationship with your Senegal.

Best case scenario, your Senegal feels safer with more "flock" & isn't alone when you are away from home. And the Pionus won't challenge the Senegal for territory (you) because they have each other.

Bronzewings are beautiful. Pionus are, in general, fairly quiet birds.

But when you triple the number of flock-members in your house, you may more than triple the noise because they do begin to have 'wild' conversations among themselves. [Actually, at our house, the Grey, Macaw & Amazons' only common language is English, apparently, because that's how they converse, at least when I am in the room.]

Worst case scenario, your Senegal may hate having 2 interlopers to his or her territory & you will act out, screaming and/or biting & you will have to accommodate his needs.

Having said all that . . . we have added a number of birds in the past year, including a bonded, middle-aged pair of former breeders (lineolated parakeets) & one failed breeder (Pionus). The Pionus was an excellent companion bird until his untimely death. The Linnies are still "untouchables" but love to interact through the cage bars and have even learned to speak a few words.

One of the secrets to adding birds is having enough room that they can stay away from each other, if they like. Again, is there enough room in your apartment to accommodate the need for space?

Best of luck, whatever you decide. [And if you take the Pionus & realize it won't work out, there is an Adoptions forum here where you can try to find them a home where they are a better fit.]
