Brand new Cockatiel mummy.

Thank you for being a responsible parent. It's a shame more people don't raise their kids like that. I am always in abject horror when I see kids manhandling and terrorizing animals, especially such small helpless animals like birds.
 
They way I have trained my cockatiels in the past is to keep them in their cage for a few days to get comfotable in their surroundings and with you changing its food/water. I will then put its cage on the coffee table right next to me while I'm watching tv. I leave the cage door open and wait for it to come out on his own. They get curious and will eventually wander out! Let them climb on you or wander around for a bit. A few times of doing that and you'll be able to put your hand in its cage without it freaking out and even start to put it on your shoulder. That is just works for me. Good luck :)
