When I first got Loki I was a complete newb....and I was hoping for immediate bonding and a mushy macaw.

That didn't happen. He would step up, but really only if he had to. He never came to me, I had to "get" him.

So I read and read and followed advice as best I could. I figured out his favorite treat is safflower seeds, so I used them as rewards for stepping up, speaking to me, etc.

Now he actually runs to me at times. He does this amazingly cute kissing move where he presses the top of his beak to my lips when I make a kissing noise.

so, patience is paying off. I do this every night with him and I can tell that he is getting more and more comfortable with me.

I can't stress enough how much it helps to be able to use the search function and read how other people had overcome difficulties or built trust is so valuable.

Lastly, I have to admit that it actually feels better to be earning his trust rather than him just giving it to me freely from day one....like a sense of accomplishment and makes me fill like I have a bond with him that no one else has....:)

BECAUSE YOU DO, ACTUALLY... AND THAT'S THE THING. YOU GET THINGS NO ONE ELSE DOES WITH THESE GUYS.

It's also why people who don't do the work end up with birds that sit inside cages all day, and bite.

There are no short cuts.
