Blue Throat Macaw available

I don't know I do this to myself but I went to Valentino's breeder's web page and she has one female Congo African grey available and a almost weaned BTM. Oh Lord...why did I have to go look.

Valentino and my Eclectus are the largest birds I have lived with. I have handled large macaws, even a Hy but realized the large macaws are too heavy and big for me to fully enjoy. (I know that sounds weird but when I was holding the Hy after several mins I had to sit down and put him on my lap because he was too heavy on my arm. Lucky for me the Hy was very well socialized and layed down in my lap and enjoyed being petted) I have never seen a BTM before and I am sure they are bigger than a RFM but are they bigger than a Eclectus?

I really should go back and consider a medium size bird for the second parrot. A conure or a small amazon or another mini macaw. Maybe keep Valentino an only bird. I think I am a bit insane for considering a BTM. If there was a miracle the golden conure has a really sweet disposition.

Does anyone have a BTM as a companion. I would love to hear about them.

This is the closest to Valentino I see for choices...but he is not this plumpy yet.

I LOVE BTMs! That and a Hy are on my dream list! In the past 6 months, I've come *this close* to getting rehomed BTMs twice, but each time has fallen through at the last second. So disappointing.

BTMs are smaller than the common macaws, and certainly smaller than the Hy you held.

My research about them shows them to be generally friendly, silly and very adept as solving puzzles like cage door locks.

If you want another bird, I'd say take the opportunity and get the BT!!!

This makes sense to me as I rather like the bigger parrots for their size so it would make sense that there is someone who feels opposite of me.

Yes the Blue throat are bigger.

ETA - I <3 Blue throats and will be getting one in a few months. Keep in mind that Hy's are the biggest of the parrots. As far as macaws go blue throats are the smallest (not including any of the mini macaws of course). If you want a macaw without so much of the size a blue throat is the way to go.

Just a comment for what it's worth... Hys are the "biggest" in some ways, yes. But despite the abundance of descriptive claims out there stating that Hys are greatest in size, arguably it's GWs who hold the record for the largest Macaw species. If you examine statistics from those who have recorded the weights of many individual birds from both species, you'll find that most GWs outweigh most Hys.

That's kind of off topic for this thread, though. I just thought I'd mention it.

Not really sure if it even applies but I'll make one point that I've noticed. When it comes to our GW's, without a step stool, Deb (my wife) has a hard time trying to put them up if they're on the top of their cages. Those 2 cages are almost 6ft. tall and Deb is only 5' 1", so it makes it really hard for her to get them not to mention it puts the birds in an advantageous position to stay away from her as well.

After the morning had arrived and reality sets in I realize at this time I cannot afford this baby. The baby male BTM price alone is almost twice what I paid for Valentino. Although I would LOVE to get another parrot from Wendy the timing is not good right now. Maybe later down the line after a couple of finance things work themselves out I can contemplate a BTM baby.

Sooo...as much as this pains me to write....if there is anyone out there looking for a baby male BTM that is well raised by a very good breeder consider this baby.

The Hyacinth Macaw is the largest parrot in terms of size, the Kakapo is the heaviest parrot in terms of weight

Plax has both a Hy and a Green wing, I would say he know's what he's talking about

Well back to the topic of Blue-throats(not GW or HY) I LOVE THEM there smaller then blue and golds but bigger then red fronts they are considered the smallest of the large macaws. where is your breeder from?? i would love to look into it if she has a breeding pair. not now but probably in a couple years

I am in the same boat as I am quite seriously debating adding a BTM as our second parrot. This is because not only do the BTM fascinate me and enchant me but Valentino was raised with BTM's also. I would not have to worry about having to quarantine the BTM for the full 90 days but would do the 30 day due to the bird coming from the same breeder I got Valentino from.

If I was to add the BTM it would also take me a couple of years to do this right. Valentino and the current BTM baby male came from Wendy Craig from Wendy's parrots. In all my years of being in the parrot world I have never come across a better breeder than Wendy. She is not only the most ethical breeder I know but she truly loves what she does, she makes the effort to keep current with parrot care and breeding and what I am most impressed about she will work with you as to what your needs are. She was very instrumental with helping to make my dream come true of getting a RFM.

For me right now Valentino is quiet a hand full with being a baby and takes up so much of my time with the training, nurturing and bonding stages getting another baby at this time would be insane. One of two things is going to happen for us here. Once I get Valentino to the stage I want him to be (and I do realize this is ongoing for the rest of his life but I pretty much mean out of baby stage and to a more day to day stable type thing) I will consider getting a BTM, another mini-macaw, smaller amazon or a larger conure or Valentino will remain my only parrot companion.

I realize of late my asthma sucks a lot more as it does in the winter time and keeping up with baby Valentino can be a challenge for me when I am not doing well. Lupe is willing to pick up the slack with helping me keep him and all clean but I am the trainer and nurturer for him.

In my mind I am considering a BTM a step up in size from a RFM. I wish I could handle some BTM's locally here to really get a feel for them. (did that sound wrong? LOL) Wendy would be my truth meter for if this bird would make a good companion for all of us here.

I noticed your location is Las Cruces. Lupe and I use to travel to El Paso/Juarez every two years to visit her family and we have visited Las Cruces may times. I enjoy the southwest a lot and hope to someday retire out there in that area. I have enjoyed all my trips out to the southwest a lot and maybe would be more friendly environment for my asthma.

Kakapos are the largest parrot out there... often weighing up to or around 8 lbs. That's a lot of bird!!!

On average, greenwings may be heavier, but maybe it's the fact that hyacinths are longer? (on average, head to tail)


I would think that BTM's are about the same size as an RF or somewhat larger. I know they aren't as large as a B&G.


I've thought about having a BTM sometime in the future, because I love B&G's, but I'm not sure I'd be fine with such a large parrot... and a BTM looks pretty similar! Well, close enough that some people think they are baby B&G's! Space, time and money currently stop me from having anything larger than a conure, and my flock is big enough!


Hopefully, that gorgeous little boy finds a great home!

I know it is everybody's personal choice what species of parrot they feel is right for them. And I understand that some are not comfortable with handling the big boys & girls like GWs & Hys. I just wanted to say that I am a 5'2" female and I absolutely love the majestic size of the macaws! And I have had all sizes of parrots, but the macaw remains my fav.

I can't wait til my GW gets home & grows into the gentle giant they are know to become in most instances given a good loving home. So, if at all possible & you have the space & time, don't rule out owning one of these truly awesome gems. A blue throat would be a nice size to move up to when you are ready, I think.

When my family moved off our 300 acre ranch we had to sell our Congo African Grey. It was tough as Gabriel had been apart of family for over 15 years. I once I finish with graduate school I have been planning on buying a Blue Throated Macaw from a local California breeder. From my research all of what I have heard about the species is they are one of the best species of Macaw to keep that is available (breeders preference). This with the highlights that they are midsized and extremely personable. LOL Just my regard on the subject if anyone else is considering Blue Throated Macaws.

I will definately be adding a macaw to my flock just not now as im in school and a sun conure is part of my dream flock so the other half of my flock will have to wait til i get outta school I've been debating whether it be a GW or a BTM. maybe ill have both my limit was 3 parrots two being a sun and macaw for sure and the third will be that one parrot that i cant resist adopting from somewhere lol! I love the blue-throats because there SO cute! lol and very personable and smart! i've read about them picking combination locks and getting out of there enclosures!! and i've always loved greenwings for the majestic size and being known to be super gentle and loving! and red is my favorite color haha

Cool! I actually grew up in Silver City which is 2 hours from here but i love how its not to city like and we still have all the services and businesses and all that of a big city I love the outdoors lol when i was younger i would go into the mountains behind my house and be gone for hours! my mom would just yell out the back door its time for dinner lol I LOVED it but i cant now...we dont live close enough to just open wilderness like we used to:/

as for your asthma It is a great place! its pretty dry and theres not too much pollen and such floating around in the spring time, the only thing that might be a problem is when the wind wants to pick up you'd better watch out for the dust! it gets bad where you cant even drive because its so thick!
