Secret & MC, two blue front amazons
How long does this hormonal period last? Secret (a blue front amazon) is still eye-pinning and last night I didn't let her out of her cage. I started to - but when I extended the T perch to her, she started spreading feathers, eyes changed and looked like she was going to fly at me. It was just a few weeks ago she was stepping up on my hands and was nice.

Also, she needs to return to the vet shortly for another blood draw. Can that be done while she's in this stage or should I wait?

AND - I was just informed that MC, who I thought was an orange wing, is actually a blue front. This came from someone with over 20 years of parrot experience so I need to figure out how to change this in the forum.

So, are female blue fronts smaller because Secret is much smaller than MC? He has such a different, calmer disposition than she does. He seems to prefer to keep his distance (no stepping on a hand for him), but he is getting on the T perch willingly now.

Yikes, Blue Front hormones are scary :0

The visit to the vet should be fine. Be sure to keep their routine the same. I had to put my birds down earlier. I like having them out but the extended day hours will do a number on their hormones.

Good luck :)

The size will not help determine the sex. Their probably a different subspecies.

With the daylight hours becoming longer, I've noticed a difference in Amigo as well. He likes to get up with the sun, and goes down with the sun. We are going on twelve hours of each right now. I'm going to try and have him tucked in for at least 12 hrs. a night, even more seems to be better as not to allow the hormones to rage!

He's becoming more territorial with the lengthening daylight hours and black out curtains help.

I bought a light blocking curtain for Kazi's room so he get longer periods of dark. It seems to be helping a bit. If for no other reason than I can put him to bed at his regular time without any fussing or calling on his part because it's still daylight outside.

Yes, you have to respect the body language. My male blue front was extremely hormonal for about 3 months. He has just been coming out of it lately in the last week. I noticed that he stopped masturbating on his perch first and now he has been stepping up on my hand again nicely. Before this, he would lunge, bite and try to kill me. lol

Does anyone know how old the Blue Front Amazons are when they start getting Hormonal? My Toby is about 1 year old now, He is still Molting Quite a bit and I know that can make them moody. But I would like to know around what time frame they start with the hormones?

I think you will probably start seeing hormonal behavior between 5-7 years old. Though some birds do seem to start early and some are late bloomers. My Blue Crown conure should have been mature at 3 years old, but it wasn't until she was about 7 that I saw her being hormonal. I was starting to wonder if she had developed correctly in that way.
