So, my parrot Bo has been biting me and my mother, and I've had him for about a year and he shows most affection to my father. The thing is my father doesn't interact with him at all. I had to begin using a glove for him and he flew at me once and 3x with my mother, he broke his wing a bit but can still fly. His 1st owner was a male he wasn't taken care of very well, and his 2nd took care of him but was afraid to let him out for 3 years. He began to like my mother until we took him home he interacted with my father and it's been like that since. Is there anyway I can get him to like me so that I could start some training.

Welcome to the Wonderful World of Amazons! And, welcome to the Parrot Forums.

If you have not read the first two Threads in the Amazon Forum which are located at the top of the Amazon Forum page, highlighted in light blue, please do so! The first one that I would recommend that you read is Title: Understanding Body Language. This Thread is the foundation of understanding what your Amazon is communicating to you. Without this information you are left to guess.

The other thread is Titled: I Love Amazons - ... It will provide you a foundation of information that will support your life living with Amazons.

A couple of pointers regarding working with Amazons: It is NEVER the fault of the Amazon! It is ALWAYS the fault of the Human(s)! When you start from this vantage point, you more quickly see what you are doing wrong and can correct it faster!

My fear is that you may believe that there is some kind of special button or word one uses that will cause the last many years of miss-treatment to simply go away! There is no such button! Can it be reversed, Yes! But it requires you 'Starting All Over Again!" From Step One and proceeding day after day at the rate in which your Amazon is comfortable and no faster.

If you are willing to do this, I will be happy to provide support.

Where to start:

1. Please pull-up a chair next to your Amazon's cage and read a loud, yes so that your Amazon can hear you and read the Thread: Understanding Body Language to a point (as many times you need) that you understand it and can see and know those responses from your Amazon.

2. Only Good Things Happen When Humans Are Around Your Amazon

Do that and come back with a want to start from the beginning and I will be happy to help you.

Why should you believe me? Because I work with Amazons that had been yesterday's trash, left to die from serious illness, injury and /or miss-treatment to a point that they have no reason to ever trust a human again.

Welcome to the forums, thanks for joining. The post by Sailboat contains the essential universe of living with an Amazon. With a lot of love, patience, and positive training, you will have a wonderful companion for life!

Also, making friends with an amazon can take a very long time. MrC already had birds when I met him, and one of those birds was (is) a middle aged yellow nape. Goofy has never been mistreated in his life, but it still took me three years for our first real breakthrough. Even now he's not super friendly with me, particularly if MrC is home, but we have a peace treaty that we both abide by and everybody is happy.

Having been "owned" by a Blue Fronted Amazon for nearly 30 years,I thought I knew it all  Read and re-read Stevens' threads (sailboat).
Its helped me to understand Amy better.
After all...he IS our resident Amazon Guru:)

And welcome to you and Bo to an awesome forum.

Jim
