Birds and reptiles

Would it be safe to keep birds in the same room as a chemelon. I really love chemelons I'm not getting one anytime soon, probably after I finish university as a gift. I understand reptiles tend to carry salmonella and other diseases if good hygiene practices are in place the chances of me and my birds getting I'll are extremely low tight. Also could the birds chirps and screams stress a chemelon I know this is a bird forum but like doing my reserch in advance.

If itā€™s a wild caught chameleon do a fecal check with a vet for parasites. And realize that a lot of chameleons are wild caught but vendors can be giant liars about it, so find a good reputable breeder. As long as the bird isnā€™t terrorizing thru the cage & the chameleon has lots of cover you should be fine. I love chameleons too but they generally are too high maintenance for me lol. I love the jacksons so much though and am always tempted to get one.

I have the birds plus 70ish reptiles & no issues.

Wow that's a lot of reptiles I know that they are high maintenance and thanks for you advice thank you so much I think I will be able to handle it.

Yeah, there should be no problems. I read that parroys are TERRIFIED of snakes and should NEVER be able to see one as they will not be able to cope. I read this as I looked across at my amazon completely ignoring the snakes I was keeping opposite her. Neither of my parrots have ever been the slightest bit bothered by snakes and I would imagine they'll care even less about a chameleon!

I believe that although reptiles can carry salmonella they usually get sick from it too, so it isn't like a silent threat that your animal may or may not have. Like you say good hygiene practices all round wpuld remove any risks.

I would just say though that you might need to rethink the layout. I think chameleons need a lot of moisture in the air - I don't think they can drink from standing water? - so the conditions that will suit your chameleon might not suit your bird. I bird-moist room will require A LOT of misting of the chameleon as they also need good ventilation to keep the air moving and fresh. A chameleon-moist room, so less misting because the room is kept more humid, might mean your bird doesn't do so well. Parrots are sensitive, but I think chameleons even more so, so getting everything right is really important, as I'm sure you know!

I can't imagine noise would be an issue. Reptiles aren't known to be very good listeners, if you see what I mean. They're move sight, scent and heat oriented. I think a flying bird near the front of an enclosure would stress a chameleon quite a lot, I'm pretty sure birds are one of their predators. You might need to cover the front when your bird is out.

Thatā€™s hilarious that someone said parrots will never be able to cope if they saw a snake. My macaw literally waddles past the 15ft reticulated python cage all the time. The snake has even struck the side and he hasnā€™t been fazed...he might just have no survival instinct lol

Chams have many different species and their care is specific to each one. Some require tons of humidity & some will die if you provide tons of humidity. Some require extra heat & some are fine at room temp.

You donā€™t have to raise room humidity to necessarily provide the correct humidity in the enclosure. Especially if you provide a misting system if need be & live plants. A drip system works fine for drinking. Iā€™ve had species that require 90% humidity in the same room as ones that require 25%.

I love these chameleon cages. I found them when I was doing research years ago. I plan on getting the giant double one if I ever get a monkey skink. But those are a lot of work too & wont give up snake space yet for one haha

This is a decent chameleon group Iā€™m in on Facebook.

mine CANNOT handle things that look like snakes... A thin baguette 20 feet away (yes, the bread) about killed her lol. Took an hour to figure that one out...

If I am going to get a chemelon it will likely be a panther or Jackson chemelon.

Lol yes some individual behavior is always guaranteed but for something to say never across the board was just amusing to me. Titan wants to climb the snake enclosures half the time and he watches from his cage when I clean the racks. And all the other birds watch when I clean the giant cages and the baby cages downstairs.

Of course Titan also thinks the rats are fascinating and wants to stick his head in the rat holding bins. They are fully enclosed so all he can do is bounce his beak of the side while singing to them:20: I swear he just has no survival instincts or is just a weirdo... probably both:eek:

If I am going to get a chemelon it will likely be a panther or Jackson chemelon.

The group I shared has care files on at least the Jackson. I looked at it so I know they have that one but they most likely have a panther file too. Itā€™s also a good group to find a breeder since people post their successes. I found a Jackson breeder I liked when I was searching on there. She had really beautiful well cared for Jacksonā€™s & great reviews. I just donā€™t remember her name anymore.
