I just read a very sad thread about someone losing a pet to a poison plant. Do any of you have houseplants that you know are safe for your pets, especially birds? What kinds of plants are they? Often pet people are plant people, too, and I would love for us to share what houseplants we have that are safe for our pets.

I have a bird african violet I know is safe, but I really don't let my birds near the houseplants.

Chili has plants by her cage- (top to bottom) Jade, yucca, and aloe

She pretty much ignored the aloe plant, but loves Mr Yucca and poor Miss Jade has been recovering for a few weeks now because she got a horrendous hair cut from Chili [emoji33]

I have a bamboo plant. Well, I did anyway. My little trouble maker got a hold of it today.

Bamboo is safe for birds. I should get her a few plants of her own.

Silver, I just PM'd you about a word document that has a ginormous amount of info on what is safe, what's not, and why. Unfortunately I can't recall where I found it, and it's far too extensive to put the list here when we already have a toxic/safe thread. If you'd like, just reply to me with your e-mail and I can send it to you :)

By the way, I couldn't stop laughing after reading that! Thanks for the hilarious visual!

Honestly, the only reason I want to buy plants is for the birds... bahaha.

Lol you know- I wasn't expecting her to like the plants so much lol

This was Miss Jade when she came home

and this is after she got a hair cut [emoji33][emoji33][emoji33][emoji33]

(I just noticed there's a leaf on the right side where the bite marks look like a sad face HAHAHAH)

I grow rye grass from seed in shallow dishes for the birds to eat. If your worried about them getting to soil, cover with a heavy plastic/wire mesh. The grass will grow up through the mesh.

I have about 50 houseplants (probably some poisonous as well), but never allow my birds on any of them. :) I use the pineapple "flowers" and other garden plants/branches for them to chew.
Why should your birds ruin your houseplants? :) You can just grow some grass or greens for them as someone already suggested. Mine never touch any greens or grass anyway.

Thanks everyone! Veimar, I don't intend to feed my plants to the birds all the time, but I like to have some live things for them to eat. Also, I have a VERY large flock. I love to be surrounded by plants, but often there are several birds out at a time, and I am not the only human in my home - I simply don't trust that I can 100% guarantee that my birds will NEVER get to one of the plants, so I won't have any dangerous ones.
