I Sun Conure who hatched March 23. 2004. I adopted her on May 8, 2005
I had a Quaker Parrot named Nikki who lived for 19 years
I grew up with Budgerigars named Screech, Zoar and Blue Baby
I relocated the girl's cage to another room in an ideal spot. However, a family member criticized me for putting the cage in front of the thermostat. He said: "those birds will make dust and it will get inside the thermostat and that's the end of it." He basically said that if I foul out the thermostat I am dead.

Do Quakers and Suns make dust that can clog a thermostat?

This highly depends on what kind of Thermostat you have. The new high-end digital units tend not to be greatly effected by general dust as occasional cleaning will eliminate and build-up. The much older style are not effected at all, but should also be cleaned occasionally.

I do not get into household disagreements as there is always much more going on beyond the topic at hand!

I don’t know how easily dust gets inside a thermostat. Quakers and Suns are not particularly dusty but all birds make some feather dust. Do you have air purifiers or home AC? Filters take a lot of dust out of the air and will help with that.

It sounds to me like your family member was being unkind to you and could have handled that in a less threatening way. There’s no way to prove that bird dust damaged a thermostat… you are an adult and your family member should treat you with respect.

You could always find out what brand of thermostat you have and email the company to ask if dust is a big issue? It seems to me that lots of things you might do or have in a house are dusty and I would hope it would be hard to get enough dust in there to damage it.
