So, I was looking at some photos of BHC's on Instagram and noticed something.... Some BHCs seem to have black eyerings, while others, like my Onyx, have white eyerings.

What's the difference? Is it some sort of sub-species or mutation? Does anyone know? Onyx's eyerings are white and actually can blush pinkish when she gets excited.

What color are your BHC's eyerings?

Juno has white eye rings

That is unusual. All mine are red

I was referring to the skin around her eyes...otherwise Juno is just starting to get the red

I wonder if they're like Poicephalus, in that outdoor Poi's have black eye skin, and ones who get much less natural light are lighter color.

I've always wondered the same thing about Poi's, and I think I read that somewhere.

Eliza's eyerings look quite similar to Onyx's. In this photo, the eyerings look almost white, but there was a lot of light coming through the window. (And forgive me if I'm misunderstanding the definition of eyerings: I'm referring to the skin around the eye, rather than the eye itself.)

Perhaps they change color due to moods. In this case, the mood is "Yeah...we're on your guitar case. We like it here. In fact, we like it so much, we're staying here. Gonna try and do something about it?!" ;)

To clarify, yes, I was referring to the skin-- if I meant eye color I would have said iris or eye color :'D

Ok, so maybe it is a sun exposure thing; like a tan or natural defense against glare and sunburn.

I did read somewhere that sun exposure is definitely a factor and that Caiques with lots of sunlight exposure have a different skin color than those that don't. This was actually discussed in a thread on this forum a few months ago if I recall correctly :)
