I notice there are some South African members here, so I'm sure you'll be able to offer me some guidance.
Percy came to me with a jar of "parrot food" which was mostly black sunflower seeds and some dried pellet type thingies. He also had iceberg lettuce (!) & some pieces of carrot in his cage.
I tossed the sunflower laden food & bought him a parrot pellet mix without any seeds in it. I stupidly did not keep the package so I can't remember the name but I read the pack & it seemed the best choice at short notice. The pellets are little extruded cylinders in four colours. Percy took a while to accept them but now nibbles at them throughout the day and especially around midday and before dinner, when his veg bowls are removed after he's eaten (to void gnats and flies).
He loooves fruit and veg (no more iceberg for him, he gets lots of different veggies & fruits :) )and seems to eat much more of that than the pellets.
I also give him a bowl of dry treats consisting of "doughnuts" and compressed disks of food which the petshop assured me were good for him.
Now that my knowledge of parrot feeding has improved, I was wondering if anyone here can recommend the best pellet mix to buy him?
By the way, he does get seeds and nuts in his diet too but I limit those to training rewards and foraging foods.
Yikes, I do seem to go on and on, don't I?:54:

Hopefully antoinette, one of our Super Mods here would give you some insight. She would know! :)

Hi there MomtoPercy welcome to our awesome forum

I actually emptied Mishka pellet mix packets over the weekend and threw the packaging away, can't remember the name.
I purchase it from Mishka's vet in Bryanston.

Johannesburg - Northern suburbs:
Bryanston Veterinary Clinic, Dr. Brett Russell
99 Grosvenor Rd (junction Grosvenor & William Nicol next to BMW showroom)
011 706 1381 Clinic hrs. Weekdays 8 - 6 Sat. 8 - 11

They are very friendly and helpful, ask them what they pellets are called, they will assist you.

If your location is far from Bryanston, sure they will be able to tell you where else they are sold.

Pellets
In recent years food for avian species in pellet form has become available. There are excellent brands in the U.S.A. and Europe. South Africa has produced a couple of brands, but the overseas ones appear superior. Harrison’s, Zupreem, Kaytee, Pretty Bird, Versele Laga’s Nutribird, Top Organic, and Dr Mac's are but 7 quality products from the U.S.A.,Belgium and Australia. Kaytee,& Nutribird and are available in South Africa.
For many years I imported Harrison’s, and I feel that these are one of the best as they are manufactured from organically produced grains, nuts and corn. They have however become VERY expensive to import.

The South African brands are Avi Parrot Bix, and Animal Zone (Pet Line).
The latter makes fruit chunks (coloured), a maintrenance pellet, and a feather enhancer that contains African red palm oil.The Avi products change from time to time. My greys have started eating the A.Z. Pellets, although they won’t touch the Avi. Both are marketed through most pet stores.
Be very wary of pellets in plastic bags with no labels. These could have been decanted from large stocks, and may have become contaminated during the debagging process. In addition there is no nutrient information, or instructions of how to feed the pellet, or contact numbers of the manufacturers.
We in South Africa MUST become more quality conscious, and recognise our rights as consumers.
