1 nanday conure Black Jack, 1 Brotogeris parakeet Whiff, 1 ring neck dove Eliza, and 6 society finches (3 are tame). RIP my parent pairs of societies and my little gouldian finches
my lady gouldian finch beeper is sick with what i think is air sac mites :(. we took him to our local pet store, the owner is great and is our first stop before the vet because he does the stuff a vet would do for free and faster, he even removed our gecko's cataracts for us. this morning beeber was on the bottom of the cage, a little later he flew to the top, i caught him with my hands and he didnt even put up a fight. we took him to the pet store and he administered him some SCAT medicine. i have him in a hospital cage now. when i put his water bowl in he just sat there and my hand was right near his head and he didnt even move, and he is by no means tame, thought his previous owner hands raised him. i have a little plastic "critter keeper" with some paper towels lining it, some millet spray, and a small water dish. its sitting on a heating pad on low and draped half way with a tarry cloth towel. his tank is resting on a little shelf. were supposed to go back in 3 days for his next dose of medication. I'm just worried is there anything else i can do?

Poor baby. I wish the best for both of you.

Has your practitioner run any tests? I've never heard of "air sac mites". I think it'd still be a good idea to take him to the vet.. maybe I misunderstood you though.

he has not run tests but i told him the symptoms, plus when they have air sac mites they make a clicking sound when they breath, it kinda sounds like rice crispies when they pop in milk. air sac mites are a tiny parasite that infest the respiratory system of finches. i checked o him and he was fluttering around the cage so he seems to have perked up a bit, now hes sleeping, i think hes nice and cozy for now. i'll see how he is tomorrow and if he's eating maybe i'll give him some egg food. thanks for all the replies, they mean allot. updates to follow.

Hoping Beeper will be better soon..

thank you, i had to adjust his heating pad to medium so its about 83 degrees, I'll see how he is in the morn, right now I'm just letting him get as much rest as possible

Poor bird:/ I hope everything goes ok

Sounds similar to a respitory infection, keep em warm and keep offering food, water and antibiotics too. I'm going through the same thing now, so I feel ya. Hopefully you'll get more advise tomorrow from someone here. Mine is an owa so I'm not experienced with the little guys... You have my prayers though.

I just read this, I am sorry to hear that Ann, and you just got them not long ago...How is beeper doing???

IF I can make a suggestion on the hospital cage/tank. If you get a clamp on shop light and get a 60w bulb and wrap the sides with a towel to keep the heat in. That really works good as a good heat source.

How's Beeper feeling? Any improvement? My girlfriend has a canary and was just given ivermectin for mites she said it sounds just as you described too. Hoping your seeing improvement soon.

Its always important to wash your hands before handling your birds. Change clothes if you've been working in your garden. Dont allow your birds to climb trees outside, etc. To prevent mites. Most important thing is don't let them get in contact with a wild bird.

Beeper passed away. She put it in the bereavement section when it happened. I also haven't seen her on the forum since, but it would be nice if no one else posted in this thread just so she doesn't have to see it when she comes back.
