What percentage of chop should be made up of beans (I have black, adzuki, and garbanzo) for my Blue-headed Pionus?

Lentils, peas, garbanzos and mung beans are safest and can be given either cooked or sprouted as part of a varied diet in addition to their veggies, greens and fruit. I'd say approximately 30% of my birds daily chop is sprouted seeds and legumes. I don't feed them cooked beans at all anymore.

My birds get a mix of over 25 seeds and legumes (sprouted) every day in addition to their veggies and greens. In the bean/legume family: Mung, Adzuki and Garbanzo beans are healthiest when sprouted. You can also sprout lentils and peas.

Just for further reference: In recent years many bird folks have moved away from using cooked beans in their birds chop because if they aren't prepared properly (to get rid of the phytic acid in them), they can be difficult to digest (some beans can even be toxic). If you do use them cooked, the beans must be soaked for 8-12 hours, rinsed and then thoroughly cooked. It's the kidney and lima beans in particular that are the most toxic if undercooked. Black beans are generally considered safe when cooked properly.
