When can it be done? My breeder can do it for me, she knows how. But i just want to know if there is another way to let Kody chew off the extra beak? Its getting a bit long, too long anyway. At what age can i start it and what is the consequences/ effects on the bird?

Info on this subject and your opinions will be appreciated. Thanks!!!

I'm not sure about what age it is safe to trim the beak of the bird, but I would think Kodie would be old enough.

If you have natural perches (calcium, cactus, wood, cement), then birds usually rub their beaks on them and it wears them down a little. Sisqo also loves to rub his beak on the bars of his cage after he's had a messy meal. I'd assume this also helps. It's also good for their beak if they shred things like papers, wheat grass mats, and wood. It helps keep their beak trim.

If Kodie's beak is a bit overgrown though, it might be a good idea to get it trimmed down just a little. I think the tips mentioned above are best to keep a beak in shape, not to trim it down a lot.

Here's a pretty good article about it:

You can also get toys now that help with beak trimming, or I should say helping them keep the beak down. There called moon rocks here I think, but they are basically the same as the perches.

Kodie would be old enough now to have it done, I would have thought. He's coming up for a year now isn't he?

Jip, he's birthday is around the corner!!!:D Gonna get up alot of pics for his birthday! I've got to check out the DIY section on some party ideas. Darkchi, your baby just had her birthday a while ago, maybe you can throw in some ideas on the birthday side, birdy cake, and that cute shreddable you made for her.:D

Just make sure who ever is doing it knows what to do each bird species has a slightly different shape so make sure the person trimming knows what a normal eclectus beak should look like and only do a little bit at a time the beak can be very sensitive if you trim too much. I would definitly try letting him chew toys before considering an actual trim.

Cricket got to have a corn muffin and the pinata :D which she desided the best place to chew on was its butt lol I took some pictures (wasnt sure if you saw them)

its so amazing, seems like only yesterday I was complaining about how evil she was and that I never thought she would become "nice"... say it like that because we all know our fids are like women being teased with chocolate bars while on there menstrual cycle... can snap at any moment :04:

I was thinking about that when I saw Crickets pics of her first day out. Its brilliant that she has come this far and you should be very proud of yourself. A lot of people wouldn't have worked so hard. Well done you. :)

Jip, you held out pretty good with Cricket. Kodie is also getting to be a sweetheart. He too, well, was a bit full of nonsense a while ago. Going to my breeder saturday, so she will tell me if the trimming is needed and she will do it for me. Saw your bday pics of Cricket, did you make the pinata yourself?

No, I bought it at the pet store and it cost about $10
I think its a lot for paper and cardboard that wont last long :D
but it was her b-day so i broke the bank

I'm sure she'll do the same for you when she's bigger, and her allowance has risen a bit. :D
