We are back at the vet. Waiting to talk to doc. Basil was basically himself all night and this morning. There is still a small amount of blood in the bowel movements. He also strains a little bit when going. Will let you know what doc says.

We are back home again from the vet. They did blood work on him, did x rays and another physical exam. The doctor said that he has a mineral deposit/calcification in his GI tract and asked if I give him supplements. Of course, we know I’ve been converting him from Zupreem to Harrison’s (first) and Tops pellets (now). He doesn’t get supplements and only fresh food offered alongside those pellets.

He sent me home with an antibiotic to be given twice a day, and told me to get regular (not sugar feee) Metamucil. I am to give him a slurry made from 1/16 teaspoon and water three times a day. He believes that the strain, discomfort and bleeding is coming from passing the “stone” and this should help. The antibiotic is for maintenance until we get fecal culture, fecal parasite, and bloodwork back. I’m still also spraying his food and pellets with a fine mist of pure apple juice to help with a natural laxative effect.

He did not want to do anything else until he is sure there is nothing negative in the lab results. I asked about the endoscopy and he said he wasn’t comfortable if basil has an infection doing that and inducing more stress. So we wait until Monday for the CBC to come back.

Basil is being his normal self except a little sleepy at first. I think this is from the anesthesia and stress. He’s now climbing about the cage and coming over to me at the table to see what I was eating. Paprika and him are getting along and she was pacing at the bottom of her cage when I got home. As soon as she saw him she went back up to her rope perch and started talking. I think she missed her neighbor.

I will keep you posted if anything changes.

I am glad you and basil have plan to get him back to feeling better! Just curious what is the metamucil Suppose to do?

The fiber is supposed to help gently push the calcification out the intestinal tract naturally.

Something that a t us showing up bright on the x-ray that appears like calcification that can be passed sounds like it can be metal or a foreign body... I
Pumpkin works like that because if the fiber. But sounds like they want even more fiber that is found in Metamucil. I hope that does help him and fix the problems. O hope tge rest of your test results are good.

Thinking about you guys. Thanks for updating us. Basil feel better buddy!!

Thank goodness they did the x-ray. Did they say what they thought caused the blockage? I know certain foods can cause kidney stones in humans (like, if you eat a ton of certain types of beans etc).

Update: Basil had a bunch of blood in the stool yesterday. I believe whatever the calcification was has now passed because we have had a lot of poo without blood today. He is still acting completely like himself, and no outward signs of feeling ill. I hope that this is over now. I am still on poo monitoring for the next few days for sure, especially until we get the test results back.

Someone asked what the calcification was from. The doctor said it could be built up from his life. It could be from the change in his diet (from Zupreme to Harrison’s to Tops and Chop). It could be something he swallowed, which for him is weird because he is not a chewer at all. So we just don’t know.

This has been a pretty poopy conversation, hasn’t it?

Well you know what they say, "the poop don't lie!" Encouraging signs Alembic, I'm so glad Basil is doing better and hope this is all over for you too. Enjoy poop patrol :)

So glad Basil is improving, hopefully he'll be back to normal soon.

No worries about poop, we scrutinize closely as it critical to our fids health.

I could eat a donut while examining pics online, doesn't bother me a bit!

Glad you are seeing improvement! Is his wright staying the same?

Its hard to tell in the picture, but is the urine green tinged? If it is it can indicate infection, or liver Inflammation. I'd like to see my urates and thicker creamier, rather than stringy.

But looking much better

His blood work and fecal cultures and parasite panel came back. There was nothing abnormal in the culture or parasite panel. His blood work shows a 0.10% over normal in his LDL and Uric acid levels. The vet believes this could be his age or diet, and may just be the normal for Basil.

They want me to continue the antibiotic for the ten days as originally prescribed and the benebac too.

There has been no bleeding and his poo is looking normal, if not a little more looser then before. So things are peaceful and calm for now.

Close to a perfect report! Some parrots have a "normal" zone slightly outside the range, generally not a cause for concern if stable over multiple tests.

Hope the peace and calm continue!!
