african grey (Gizmo)..umbrella cockatoo (Wacko RIP)...military macaw (Rowdy)...blue fronted amazon (cookie RIP)
my new baby Rowdy has been very nippy lately mainly to my husband we wanted to gradually see how he would get along with the other 2 birds Gizmo african grey and Wacko umbrella cockatoo and only female, and he got along great but unfortuantly his talons are still quite little too stay in the big cage so when my husband tries to take him out to feed him he lunges at him. my husband usually wins but it is a battle, so starting tomorrow we are moving his cage a little further away when it is open so he can't latch on to much bigger cage. when cages are closed we will keep them together.

Tonight i seperated the cages before realizing i don't think Rowdy has ever been alone even when i first got him he was in a cage with another macaw like him he cried and so did wacko for like 20 minutes I think wacko adopted him as a mother figure as soon as I put the cage next to each other and covered them again it was all quiet.

I'm not quite sure I understand what you did with the cage. I understood the part that Rowdy has lunged at your husband, but what does the cage have to do with that? (Sorry, truly confused here.)

Were you saying that Rowdy will be housed together with one (or both) of your other birds???

At 4 months, he is hardly mean nor vicious. He's merely testing his boundaries. :) All macs (actually most birds) go through this phase. He's learning to be a 'big' boy.

Persistence is key here. Beak pressure training is a must, as is for Rowdy having to learn to entertain himself.

He WILL test you (or your husband) for some time to come.

let me see if i can explain it better, but let me first say all is quiet now and fine...we have 1 really big cage that can house a few birds but even Mark from parrots of the world suggested not to put Rowdy in the big cage yet because his feet are still a little too small to stay on the perches. my husband being who he is a man wanted to test that option and put rowdy in the cage rowdy loved it and stayed put but when it was time to come out wasn't happening my husband and i agree don't want to cover the cage for fear rowdy might fall. we going to wait on doing that again....

rowdy is in a smaller cage that sits next t the big cage since placing them closer together rowdy and wacko which is the mother figure i would imagine is nice and quiet at night now.
