I will probably hear a lot of flack but....

I brought home two things from the fair.
Got a young Green Cheek Amazon now named Merlin, and a tree stand
not sure this link is going to work.

Tree stand will be moved into the bedroom but I have it in the livingroom so all the birds can get use to it.

Merlin is in quarantine in my Son's bedroom. Will be making an appointment with the CAV on Monday. He is very nervous right now, just have to give him time to settle in.

Luna has seen him and is highly interested. Merlin is interested in Luna also because he was still with his siblings when I bought him.

This is a most critical time for him the first 24/48 hours in his new home.

Nice looking aquisition, Wes. BTW thanks for the card and all. Salty enjoyed it too (we let him chew any cards received or sent ).

Merlin started playing with his toy and eating just a bit.
A very good sign.
So far he has been very quiet but if he is eating this soon after coming home I think he will do well.

Glad I was able to get a card to you. It was the only get well that had a bird in it;).

Congrats on your new birdie! Hope Merlin settles in quickly!! Beautiful Amazon! How'd this one steal your heart? Did you go knowing you wanted a new addition, or did the pretty feathers lure you in :)

I have been looking for a good match for Luna who is also a green cheek amazon.
Luna likes to watch videos of all amazons but when I show her one with a GCA in it she goes nuts.
Because she was a rescue I will never know for sure but I think she started life in a wild flock in/near San Diego.
I did not expect to find any at the fair but I was looking for one.

I know there is never a guarantee that any 2 birds will get along but I have my fingers crossed. I believe both birds are young, Merlin still being less than 1 year old they should be flexible enough to coexist.

Oh Awesome! I remember you posting about Luna before! I didn't know they had wild flocks if Amazon in CA?! How do they catch the wild ones to sell??

I don't know if anyone is catching members of the wild flock. I hope not.
If someone did I would imagine you would have to find where they are nesting. I have seen video of them nesting in palm trees.

The way I got the story of Luna was this.

A friend of a member of the forum found Luna on the sidewalk somewhere and it was weak, to weak to fly away. This person picked up the bird and gave it to the forum member to care for.

The forum member took it to the vet and cared for it until it was healthy. They could not keep the bird already having 3 or 4 birds of there own. I volunteered to take the bird in. At that time I had just lost Pacho and I only had 1 Amazon, down from 3 I had had for more than 20 years. So I was looking to fill the void I had.

When I got Luna she was able to say Hello and Parrot. Someone had owned this bird in the past but it was unsocialized towards people. The way she reacts when she see's other Amazons leads me to believe she has been around other birds.

One other strong possibility exists. Someone bought this bird as a pet from a breeder. Had it for a year or 2 but got tired of her screaming (she is a very good screamer). Being tired of the screaming she released Luna into the wild thinking it would join the wild flock of birds. Seeing as Luna was raised in a cage she would not have the stamina to keep up with those born in the wild. She got left behind and could not find food/water.

I can make up stories all night long but there is just know way to be sure.
I am sure she want the company of another amazon and it is my hope I can give that to her.

:green1:

So jealous thats totally the parrot I want. very awesome gotta live vicariously lots of pics please.

Welcome home, Merlin!

Merlin's a beauty! Nah, no flack coming your way.... you have a natural talent with birds and trusted your gut! I have a feeling this is going to work very well!

What do you mean "no flack coming your way" well, here is some:
-
WHAT??? Merlin was with siblings and you did not bring us one as well??!! What were you thinking!?!
-
LOL, great find - I hope Merlin will be healthy and a great friend to you and Luna.
-
You had me completely fooled (red the other post about the market first) and you sounded somewhat disappointed ... and now this!
Happy for you!

I was very unhappy with the breeder.
The cage of GCA that Merlin was in had nothing but a seed mix heavy on sunflower seeds.
I asked about diet/pellets and his response was "oh ya there is pellets in the seed mix". Could not have been more than 20 to 1 ratio.

If there had been another breeder with the same type of Amazon I would have preferred to buy from someone else. Unfortunately I can't save all the birds out there, I can only hope someone responsible buys the others/.

A while back I started a thread with a pole about buying a RLA that was at the local pet shop. I wanted to get her to be a friend for Luna also. In the end many people came up with very valid reasons why it was a bad idea.
Some of those reasons still apply.
I know it's not a good idea to buy a bird for a bird you already have. That's what I mean by getting a lot of flack about getting Merlin.

Grinnn, we know that you are aware of what you are doing- and I am so keeping my fingers crossed those two will like each other.
But if it does not happen- you will still be great to both of them - so no flacking....
