So baby girl is a harlequin macaw that I adopted from the rescue I work with about 4 months ago. She came in with a lot of issues that were very severe and she hated everyone but me:). So let's start her story a little,

We got a call about a harlequin and a red lored amazon that needed picked up ASAP so one of our volunteers went and decided to do this. The birds came with nothing and really had nothing at all in there cages. The red lored was sweet and so was baby at first, but then the honeymoon was over lol. She got extremely aggressive towards almost every volunteer even attacking one ladies chest. I had no issues with baby girl though she loooooved me. And I loved her there is something about pluckers and mutilaters that takes my heart away and I fall for them. Soo a month went by and baby was getting less attention from other staff and progressing worse as people were afraid.when baby bit that ment blood was getting spilt lol. Soo I was asked to take her home. I have had her home now awhile she is great besides a few small issues. Her plucking has become less severe and she is a happy girl.

I'd like to say please give your birds plenty of toys and stimulation because this is what can happen when you don't...

I had to try sweaters I feel bad for the poor thing she literally had nothing now she is letting some go on her back and chest although she still is messing with her tail and wings. I tell people she is half terodactyle.. Lol

Here is one of how sweet she truly is closing her eyes after put a pillow on her head when I was making my bed on morning and she thought she needed to join in.

She is happy now and this is the true rewards of rescue seeing these birds that are given up on flower and blossom to become amazing. If all I can ask is that you learn please make your birds play with toys and give them things to do. There are many cheap at home toys you can make and give for hours of enjoyment.

I love her dearly and just wanted to share a little about my most recent rescue, a little way of getting you guys to know me and my birds a little better:)

A fellow rescuer thanks you for your good work. I, too, have a soft spot in my heart for pluckers. I love her pink sweater. And, I agree about toys & keeping them busy. "Busy beaks are happy beaks."

Great job! I also volunteer at a shelter and am amazed at how some of the meaner birds will find the right person and be the perfect companion bird for them.

Today was not one of those days. One of the volunteers was attacked by an amazon. She is a really nice lady that brings fresh fruit and veggies every day to the birds. This time, the parrot just went after her. Scary how vicious they can be.

The up side to this is that with the right person, even a bird like this may transform in to a great companion.

poor girl :(

Also mention diet, a bad diet is terrible for a bird and makes them unhealthy and not as happy as they could be. I expect that poor thing didn't get a good diet considering her condition and lack of any belongings.

Well yes you are right she came in manly seed and we switched her to a mixed diet of pellets and seeds with treats of in shell almonds, walnuts, hazel nuts, and pistachios. As well she looooves fresh fruits and veggies. She is now on a very balanced diet compared to what we call "crack" because it is soooo bad for birds to have sunflower seeds and peanuts:/.

What a heartwarming story! It has me smiling and teary eyed at the same time! Baby is SO fortunate to have you in her life, to love her for whom she is. :)

Probably a stupid question: How did you get her to accept the sweater? Did she willingly allow you to put it on her, or did she protest?

Thank you for sharing Baby's story!! :)

It saddens me that this can happen to birds, just being neglected, so not right.

But then you come across ppl like you JT, you are few and far apart, you have a heart of gold. You have given baby another chance to enjoy life. There is no greater gift than what you have done.

Ps i love her little jacket.

what a great story!, I'm a firm believer that things happen for a reason.
If you had not worked at the rescue organization, and your bird had not been mistreated, your paths never would have crossed.
this was meant to be! :) :)

well she accepted it quite readily, the sweater is something i kind of designed for birds in my home just for fun. All it is is a peice of fleece cut to cover the chest and under the wings then has it cut so the bird can still deficate and so on then two cut straps on the back that you tie.

i just started by letting her play with it first then i started throwing it on her as a game and getting her used to that it wasnt a monster. then i started putting the straps over her head and so on. What made it easier with baby was that she allowed me under her wings already so getting the under the wing strap on was easy enough as she was readily offering that option. then around the head came with a little bit more patience and phrasing then she just let me do it and enjoyed it. baby loves me and trusts me so she accepted it quickly as she knew out of everyone else shes met im hers:). it took maybe the process of 30 minutes to get her adjusted to it and playing in it. Honestly i haven't put any on her for quite awhile, i really should she loves them.

Thanks everyone for your positive posts and encouragement, this kind of reaction and happiness is what keeps me doing rescue which can be hard some times:).
