Sulphur Crested Cockatoo
We found a baby cockatoo in forest next to house 5 weeks ago. Put it in an open enclosure, and parents have been taking care of it ever since. They feed it multiple time a day. It seems to be loosing feathers, and worried it might have beak and feather disease. I attached some photos. It started growing a tail feather about 2 weeks ago, but it does not seem to be developing properly. Is it normal for baby cockatoos to loose down feathers when they get adult feathers, or is something wrong?

How do the parents look?
Baby toos who have BFD get it from their parents. Adult toos get it from other flock members. If the little one has only been exposed to the parents and the parents look okay I would say it is doubtful
As to loosing down or pulling it as the adult feathers grow I really don't know. Could the parents be pulling it or perhaps the baby itself? I only have experience with adult toos.

Poor baby! No its not normal for a baby covlckatoo or any other bird to be losing, not growing feathers. Can't you take him to an avian vet? He doesn't stand a chance if you don't.

The parents look very healthy. But we saw one cockatoo a while ago in our backyard that looked very sick. It has lots of feathers missing.

The problem is the parents are tending to it all the time. They are here many times each day. I am worried if we take him/her to the vet and parent can not find him/her they might abandon it. I also read there is no cure for beak and feather disease if that is what the poor baby has.

At this time there isn't a cure for BFD. If it is BFD it's immune system will either suppress it or it will die. That is the unfortunate truth at this time.
If I were in your position I would take a wait and see attitude as there isn't much else you can do.

Would you please keep us updated as to the baby's condition?
Thanks
